Actress Lena Dunham has never been shy about opening up about her struggles. In 2015, she wrote an essay for Lenny Letter about being diagnosed with endometriosis — a condition that causes the tissue that lines the uterus to grow in other parts of the body — and since then, she’s been honest and upfront about every aspect of her journey.

On March 11, in honor of Endometriosis Awareness Month, Dunham gave her Instagram followers a taste of her unfiltered honesty and opened up about her struggles with her body image. In the post, she admitted that though her relationship with her body is constantly evolving, it “isn’t always positive.”

Below a photo of herself in a black swimsuit, she wrote, “I’ve never called myself ‘body positive’ because my relationship with my curves and scars isn’t overtly political — it’s wildly personal. And it isn’t always positive. I take enormous comfort in the body positivity movement, but I think of myself as something more like ‘body tolerant.’

She continued: “With a chronic disease (or three), it’s impossible not to resent your body sometimes. But we are no longer in an on-and-off toxic romance. We are also not monogamous. I drift toward her and away from her, trying hard to remember that, no matter how I fight it, she is me. I am her. We only have each other, so we gotta stick together. And sometimes that means a little lace to remind her I care. To other people living with #endometriosis, I’ve learned more from you than I can even explain.”

This isn’t the first time Dunham has addressed her struggles with her body image. In Feb. 2019, she posted a photo of herself in lingerie, noting that though she weighs the most she ever has, she’s also at her happiest.

“At 32: I weigh the most I ever have. I love the most I ever have. I read and write and laugh the most I ever have. And I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” she wrote. “Not the frail, precarious happiness of ‘things are going perfectly.’ The big, generous, jiggly happiness of ‘I think I’m finally starting to get the hang of this.’ Not too much… Just enough.”
