Thirst.

Most mornings, I wake up and I am extremely thirsty. The strange thing is, though I love water, I still do not want it. I never want to drink the water that is right next to my bed. I realize this will not make much sense to some, but it is a daily struggle for me. I know the benefits of water. It quenches my thirst. It regulates my body. It is essential for my bodily function. Even with all of these benefits, I still do not want the water.

Just because I refuse to drink does not mean I am not in need. Water is not optional, it is a necessity for life.

Well, most of us are thirsty in one way or another. We know we are missing something essential. We also know what we need or more specifically, Who we need to quench our thirst, but we do not want to reach over and drink. Instead, we are going without or trying to fill our voids with things that will never satisfy us.

We need to come to a place that our thirst drives us to drink.

When Jesus encountered the woman at the well, she was drawing literal water. Water that would satisfy for a moment, but that would inevitably need to be replenished. Jesus offered her superior water. He offered her water for her soul.

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” John 4:13-15 NIV

The same water Jesus offered the woman at the well is available to you and I.

My prayer is that we would reach over and take a drink of the Water that is available to us. May our desire to drink overwhelm our desire to go without. As you read this, I pray that God will give each of us an unquenchable thirst for the Living Water, Jesus Christ. I pray that by the help of the Holy Spirit our desires and our cravings change. May our souls thirst for the living God because He is good.

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” Psalm 42:1-2 NIV

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8 NIV
