Wahine Maori voices absent in health decisions
It's International Women’s Day, and the Health Quality & Safety Commission is highlighting the importance of having wāhine Māori and Pacific women in leadership positions in the health system.
Māori health outcomes director Stephanie Turner says the current lack of such women is affecting quality and safety.
She says the health system privileges Western knowledge systems and norms, which have a direct link to health inequities in Māori and Pacific communities.
Having more wāhine Māori and Pacific women making decisions would mean models of care that are closely connected into and with communities would become the norm, as would commissioning and funding models that enable Māori and Pacific whānau and consumers to design services in settings that work for them.
