Aotearoa history lessons to take regional flavour
The Education Ministry has released a draft curriculum on what primary and secondary students will learn about New Zealand history from next year.
Minister Hipkins says there have been growing calls from New Zealanders to know more about our own history and identity.
In practice, learners across New Zealand will explore the stories that are unique to their areas.
He says people in Te Tai Tokerau, for example, have expressed interest in learning about the Northern War and the battle that took place in Ruapekapeka in 1845, while Waikato ākonga may delve more deeply into the invasion of their role led by Governor George Grey.
The ministry has worked with teachers, school leaders, school sector representatives, academics, representatives from the Māori, Pacific, migrants and disabled persons communities to draft curriculum content.
The content was tested in a small number of schools and kura in Term 4 last year.
Consultation on the draft curriculum runs until the end of May.
