KUALA LUMPUR – The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) MyQaseh emerged as the best team at the QI-NPC Inter-media bowling tournament held at the Sunway Mega Lanes, Petaling Jaya today.

The 4-member team, comprising NST, Berita Harian, Harian Metro, and the sales department, scored 2,679 points followed by Bernama Outlaws Crescent Digital with 2,649 points and Buletin Utama TV3 with 2,568 points.

“We used to have a league in the NSTP, so most of us used to play for those leagues.

“We teamed up for the first time today. It was surprising that we won (the best team category) because we had two good games but were not doing so well in the remaining two games,” team member Najmuddin Najib told The Vibes.

One of their team members also obtained the highest score for the individual women's category, 684 points, through Sharifah Omar.

As for the individual men’s category, Bernama’s Auzan Ayub led the scoreboard with 784 points.

“I would always represent Bernama whenever there’s a bowling tournament for the media, but this is my first win since I joined the media 9 years ago,” said Auzan.

PETRA News, which was represented by its English online news portal The Vibes, was in eighth place with a total score of 1,738.

A total of 10 media teams participated in the event, including PETRA News, Media Prima’s TV3, Bernama, TwentyTwo13, New Straits Times Press, NPC, Sabah Journalists Association (SJA), Asia News, and Penang Press Club.

Meanwhile, seven other teams competed in the sponsor category – QI Group Malaysia, Nestlé (Milo), Swiss Garden Hotel, Breast Cancer Welfare Association, Hexa Communications as well as Telum Media.

The inter-media bowling tournament made a comeback after a two-year hiatus due to the restrictions of the pandemic.

It was co-organised by the National Press Club (NPC) and QI Group Malaysia to foster good camaraderie between media practitioners in the country and the corporate sector.

“After two years, we’re finally out and about again. I see that everyone is upbeat and spirited. Media from all over Malaysia came together to compete and they played well.

“We are also very well represented in sports in Malaysia through our football club that plays in the Super League, called PJ City, and it’s been doing very well despite being around for only four years,” said QI Capital chief executive officer Shekhar Balasubramaniam when speaking to The Vibes.

Bowling will not be the only sporting event as NPC president Datuk Ahirudin Attan added that other sports, such as football and darts, are also in the pipeline.

“We’re happy to see the turnout today. What we are trying to do is bring the journalists in the country together through sporting events like this and more to come.

“Eventually we aim to join forces to tackle other national affairs like the formation of a media council, advocating the abolishment of draconian laws, and winning recognition for online media as the medium for reliable source in this technological day and age.

“Also, we would like to bring forth issues about the welfare of journalists in Malaysia.”
