At the ICCM5 conference in Bonn at the end of September a historic Global Framework on Chemicals and the Bonn declaration was adopted.

Thanks to the engagement and advocacy work of various womens organisations and gender experts:
- gender equality is now one principle of the new Global Framework on Chemicals;
- language on gender has been included in the Bonn declaration; and
- a resolution on "Mainstreaming a gender perspective and promoting gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls in chemicals and waste management“, including the development of a gender action plan for the new framework, was adopted.

As soon as the final documents are available, I will post them here.

Despite the difficult negotiations, we were able to achieve a more gender-responsive design of the framework - yay!

Best wishes
Anna

Hi ISLANDS Gender Community!

I am sharing with you this interesting, newly published resource on gender statistics in pacific SIDS.

Launched, by The Pacific Community the Pacific Gender Statistics Dashboard is a tool offering a comprehensive overview of gender-related indicators and metrics in the region, organised into five thematic areas—Population Demographics, Economic Participation, Education, Health, and Safety.

At ISLANDS, we work to mainstream gender into all our activities and increase gender equality in the waste and chemicals sector. Having access to this data will for sure be useful.

The Dashboard is accessible here: https://bit.ly/3tgJh2F

Hi ISLANDS Gender Equality Community!

Interested in reading about the gendered impact of climate change in Vanuatu and the inspiring ways women are responding to it? Check out the article below.

Climate change is affected women’s lives, impacting their livelihoods, food security, and worsening inequalities. But it also showcases the resilience and strength of the women of Vanuatu.

“Climate change is the main global issue affecting us today,” say the women from Port Resolution. “We are women of resilience… [climate change] tries to push us down, but we come back up and stand our ground… we come to sit and listen and contribute to global issues.”

Hello Gender Equality community, good news from the Solomon Islands!

A new programme aiming to increase women resilience to disasters has been launched.

Women and other marginalised groups are at the forefront of disaster response and recovery efforts in the Solomons, a country prone to floods, earthquakes and cyclones. This programme aims to reduce the disproportionate impact of disasters on women and girls, in all their diversity, by strengthening their resilience and capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.

Gender equality is a key component of GEF ISLANDS which aims to mainstream it in all its chemicals and waste management activities - to increase women and girls resilience, participation and leadership.

During research I came across CLEAR - The anti-colonial and feminist laboratory in Canada is doing research on plastic pollution - their approach sounds very interesting:

"Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is a feminist, anti-colonial laboratory, which means our methods foreground values of humility, equity, and good land relations. We’re working to do research differently. Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) is an interdisciplinary natural and social science lab space dedicated to good land relations directed by Dr. Max Liboiron at Memorial University, Canada. Equal parts research space, methods incubator, and social collective, CLEAR’s ways of doing things, from environmental monitoring of plastic pollution to how we run lab meetings, are based on values of humility, accountability, and anti-colonial research relations. We specialize in community-based and citizen science monitoring of plastic pollution, particularly in wild food webs, and the creation and use of anti-colonial research methodologies."
