About 100 buildings in central Wellington are without water while repairs to a burst drinking water pipe take place.

The burst pipe has also closed the entrance to Hunter Street and reduced northbound traffic along Jervois Quay to one lane.

Wellington Water reported the fault about 7am and were estimating repairs could take until early afternoon to complete.

Water was shut off for around 100 buildings on Jervois Quay and Hunter Street.

Wellington Water said a significant amount of debris was contributing to delays in the area.

And further north in Greytown, Wairarapa, contractors burst a drinking water pipe on Kuratawhiti Street. Wellington Water turned off the connection there, along with supply to Mole, Udy, and North Streets.

The agency said water service should be restored by early evening.

Meanwhile, more than 100 residents in the Lower Hutt suburb of Point Howard are facing yet another drinking water outage.

A boil water notice for the area was only lifted two days ago, after residents went without water for days because of a broken pipe.

Wellington Water said crews were now trying to avoid another burst pipe, close to where the big repair was last week.

It has temporarily turned off the water supply to 165 properties, but said it hoped to have connections restored by mid-afternoon.
