The Nelson City Council has established a Storm Recovery Taskforce to deal with the rebuild the city is facing following the August deluge.

Its members include mayor Nick Smith and councillors Matty Anderson and Trudie Brand.

At a meeting today, the council also approved $6 million in unbudgeted spending on clean-up and remedial work, up to the end of September.

That includes $3m spent on utilities and $2.3m on transport costs, along with $700,000 in geotechnical costs incurred during the Civil Defence Response.

On top of the $6m already spent, the repair bill for the city is estimated to cost between $40m to $60m.
