The ceremonies would have involved 2224 people graduating in person in Dunedin between 11 and 18 December.

University of Otago registrar Chris Stoddart said the university was saddened by the decision but believed it was the right one.

"The university has determined that it could not provide graduates with an appropriate graduation experience under current and expected Covid-19 restrictions," he said.

"The public health risks associated with running graduation events during the pandemic were also factored into the decision.

"December graduands were contacted earlier today and offered a choice of postponing their graduation until next year or graduating in absentia, with an option to attend an acknowledgement ceremony in 2022."

Graduands in Dunedin on their graduation dates next month would still be able to hire regalia, collect their certificates and have photos taken on campus.
