The Ministry of Health has confirmed the latest Covid-19 related death was a man in his 50s.

A healthcare worker from Middlemore Hospital’s emergency department says the number of staff being scratched from rosters daily is a serious concern as it is already under serious pressure due to staffing shortages.

The man has died at Middlemore Hospital after spending 40 days in ICU.

He had underlying health conditions and was first admitted to Middlemore from home on 27 August.

His death was announced at the 1pm briefing today when 39 new community cases of Covid-19 were also reported in New Zealand today.

He's the 28th person to have died from coronavirus in New Zealand since the pandemic began.

The ministry said his family is being supported by their church and community.

Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay said their "thoughts are with his whānau at this deeply sad time".
