Today project managers of the Transmission Gully construction updated the Greater Wellington Regional Council on work needing to be completed before its scheduled opening on 27 September.

The $1.2 billion highway currently has 41 outstanding problems around stormwater and sediment for which help from the regional council will be needed to finish.

In addition to the remaining work, Wellington's wider city and district councils need to do a range of tests to sign off the completion.

Greater Wellington Regional Council chairman Daran Ponter said he was nervous about the project meeting its deadline.

The consequences of missing the September opening date are costly.

The building company will lose a $7.5 million bonus and will also be fined $250,000 each day the road remains closed after 27 September.

Environmental regulation manager of the regional council Shaun Andrewartha said the deadline has been constantly communicated to the building company.

He said the tasks however are evolving by the minute.
