Obese people facing delays for gynaecological cancer diagnosis

From Morning Report, 8:21 am on 17 December 2020

Overweight people in South Auckand are facing delays to gynaecological cancer diagnosis because the hospital can't see them quickly enough.

Counties Manukau DHB says women with a body mass index over 40 are having to wait longer for diagnostic procedures than others.

It says that is to do with not being able to get enough operating theatre time. It has said in the past that some procedures are longer and more complex for very overweight people.

But the Cancer Society's Chris Jackson says the delay is unacceptable and district health boards must be able to properly care for their populations, no matter what their size.

Health Correspondent Rowan Quinn asked him what he thought about one case where a woman waited 53 days.
