ICMA President Remy Franck says: « Only an international jury like ours can choose such an impressive, international range of winners, with productions from 18 labels and eight different countries. I am particularly happy that our jury does not only focus on long-established musicians, but also closely monitors a wide variety of labels, allowing the discovery of outstanding recordings by young artists, like the ones we have this year with Elsa Dreisig, our Young Artist of the Year 2017, with violinist Chouchane Siranossian and cellist Christoph Heesch. This proves again that at the ICMA less well-known musicians and smaller independent labels also have a chance. For us, only musical quality and integrity are important. »

The Award Ceremony and Gala Concert will take place on May 10 at the KKL in Lucerne, hosted by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. The Gala concert will be conducted by Lawrence Foster. Through the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), this concert will be available to radio stations all over the world.

ORCHESTRA AWARD

Stephen Waarts, violin
We have met the violinist Stephen Waarts thanks to our friend and wonderful pianist Martin Helmchen. At an altitude of 2200 metres, on the peak of Mount Pilatus, the two musicians performed Robert Schumann’s 2nd violin sonata. Beautifully and resolutely played opening chords were followed by a performance of the highest sensitivity. Rarely have we heard such a stirring interpretation of this sonata. Stephen Waarts has deep-layered timbres, a perfect technique and musical intelligence. A splendid performance by the 22-year-old violinist. He therefore deserves our recognition. We are proud to present him with the ICMA Orchestra Award 2019 (Statement by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra)
