Wellington City Council has taken on a fight against its own chief executive in the never-ending Shelly Bay saga.

The Council’s CEO wanted to move the protestors off council land for health and safety reasons, but a handful of councillors and the mayor have filed a motion to stop that from happening.

They also visited the protestors at Shelly Bay last night.

Wellington Councillor Sean Rush told Heather du Plessis-Allan he doesn't want to see another situation like Bastion Point in the 1980s.

“This is all just about trying to make sure that we come out with a compromise solution that allows people to be safe.”

Rush says they should be allowed to legitimately protest provided the site is safe.
