The Privacy Commissioner says he'll crack down on landlords are breaching privacy rules.

It comes after prospective tenants were ordered to produce bank statements to secure homes, while others were placed on secret blacklists, unfairly keeping them out of the market.

John Edwards told Mike Hosking more cases of this behaviour from landlords are emerging.

He says as it's such a diverse market with many landlords, it's time to provide targeted guidance so landlords can stay on the right side of the law.

President of the Property Managers Institute David Pearse told Heather du Plessis-Allan that he's only been made aware of the website today.

He says legitimate property management company won't have a need to such a website.

"We've got access to a whole lot of facilities and background checks, so we don't have to indulge in this sort of thing."

Pearse says it's disgrace for legitimate landlords and companies to have access to this page.

"It's just not legitimate in this day and age with technology, we don't need this."
