New Zealand's first socially sustainable hotel has opened in Christchurch.
Christchurch's newly refurbished YMCA accommodation has been aptly named Hotel Give. It's socially sustainable because all profits go straight back into the community - investing in the next generation.
"By staying at the hotel you are literally investing in the future," Christchurch City Mayor Lianne Dalziel said.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern officially opened the central city hotel on Thursday - welcomed by local iwi and given a tour of the facility.
"I absolutely believe it will be in hot demand and another reason I think it will be in hot demand is that people want to know they're doing good with their money," said Ardern.
When people pay for a room at Hotel Give, they're also buying into the future of the next generation - with the money going to services including a 24/7 youth technology centre.
Jadah Coffie is in her last year at school and is planning to spend next year at Hotel Give.
"[I] currently have a small business that I want to take further and this space has welcomed me to take those opportunities," said Coffie, the head girl of Christchurch's Haeata Community Campus.
On the surface, it appears to be an average 96-room budget hotel but it's where the profits go that's the real drawcard for guests.
