How COVID-19 will test your Leadership

How COVID-19 will test your Leadership

Our unprecedented times call for unprecedented action from business owners and leadership teams!

COVID-19 has brought the world’s economy to a grinding halt. There is no person, business or industry immune to the economic impact that will last for months, and potentially even years. Everyone's first priority during this pandemic should be to stay safe and healthy - but as a business owner maintaining your business’s health can be equally as important.

How will you and your leadership team respond? What actions and decisions will ultimately determine your fate? These questions are not intended to be used as leadership rhetoric, to spin or create some manipulative effect, but simply it's your leadership teams response that could be legacy defining.

Respond-Recover-Accelerate

There are likely three phases that your business will go through in response to dealing with the impact of COVID-19 , each phase bringing you and your leadership team new challenges and opportunities.

  1. Respond: How will you respond to the immediate crisis with a level of stability and predictability in decision making and with clarity of vision, shared by all?
  2. Recover: How will you assess the impact and prioritise decisions around business model, people, skills , capacity and access to funding to support recovery and future growth?
  3. Accelerate: How will you respond to the opportunities? Will you and your leadership team be in a position to take decisive action and address the market opportunity with relevant currency?

Is Vision alone enough?

In a recent blog post The importance of vision: owning it and sharing , I wrote about the potential for frustration across a business when business owners and leadership teams fail to write and share their vision.

The benefit of having everyone on the same bus, going to the same destination and following the same route is obvious, but it’s about more than that. A vision shared by all means everyone in your business can make better decisions linked to strategies focused on delivering real and tangible outputs. This can mean better hiring decision, better buy-in and engagement from teams, as well as the ability for everyone to connect what they do every day to the greater ‘reason for being’ of your organisation.
