About us
The purpose of an architectural pursuit is to improve human life. We believe in the significant influence the built environment has on our minds and lives. Successful buildings emit an intangible essence that serves to enrich our lives and enhance the landscapes they rise from. Architecture offers an opportunity for infinite variety, as varied as life itself, and the design is the formulation of a question to find the right answer. Concepts that inspire our architecture are drawn from your story, from the land, and from our rich history. The TOA Architects practice is instilled with Tikanga Maori, design that pivots on the Whenua, the land, and he Tangata, the people.

Māku anō e hanga tōku nei whare. Ko ngā pou ō roto he māhoe, he pātete. Ko te tāhuhu he hīnau. Me whakatupu ki te hua ō te rengarenga me whakapakari ki te hua ō te kawariki. (Tāwhiao Tūkaroto Matutaera) TOA Architects are honoured to be presenting and exhibiting at the #NZWIMConference2024 in Wellington this Thursday-Saturday, looking at the relationship between Te Ao Māori and the built health environment.
We're on the countdown for the #NZWIMConference2024 next week - and we thought that we'd spotlight a couple of the sessions that you *might* not expect to see at a Women in Medicine Conference! We've got two incredible opportunities to join architecture and design firm, TOA Architects, to learn more about kaupapa Māori architectural design in the health/hauora space next week. TOA Architects and BVN Architecture will lead an interactive workshop that explores Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori within the built health environment. You’ll gain insights from real projects like Starship Whiti Ora and Te Kotukutuku. Participants will explore outcomes and test against a series of iwi/hapu/marae/whānau centred scenarios. TOA Architects, with Chow:Hill Architects, and BVN Architecture, will also lead a presentation that explores transformative projects from Aotearoa and Australia and looks at the profound impact of culturally appropriate design on health outcomes and opportunities within the healthcare environment. Mark your calendars for these enlightening sessions! It's not too late to register - we'd love to see you there. https://lnkd.in/gyBFcC_K #NZWIMConference2024 #TOAArchitects #KaupapaMāoriDesign #HealthArchitecture 🏥🌿

Tōia mai te waka nei Kūmea mai te waka nei Ki te takotoranga I takato ai Tiriti te mana motuhake Te tangi a te manu e Pīpīwharauroa Kūi! Kūi! Kūi! Whitiwhiti ora! Hui e, tāiki e During Matariki 2023, Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei blessed and opened Starship Foundation’s new reasearch centre, Whiti Ora. Starship Foundation were bequeathed a gift to fund a new research centre to accelerate world-class health for all tamariki in Aotearoa. This included the refurbishment of a 1970’s three-story building for Starship Foundation, Clinical Research and Tele Health. Starship were gifted a pūrākau by Dame Naida Glavish (Ngāti Whātua) which tells a story of the pīpīwharauroa laying and gifting its eggs into the riroriro bird’s nest, for the riroriro bird to care for, as it’s own. This pūrākau resonates with Starship in the sense of whānau leaving their tamariki in Starships care, to care for and nurture. This pūrākau forms as a basis and seed to carry this project. Tēnei te mihi ki a koutou Starship Foundation for this beautiful kaupapa and the incredible mahi that you do. Kua whakatangihia te tētere, kua kōwhera mai te waihoe. Kua whakatakoto ēnei o ngā kōrero ngarengare nei tā Oliver Wainwright i te pūtake wharanui whakahirahira o Te Taumata o Kupe: “…covered in a riot of patterns, with abstract motifs of waves, fish and stars swirling together in a polychromatic frenzy…. Taumata o Kupe, a new Māori meeting house and education centre for the Mahurehure community, and one of the brightest beacons of Aotearoa New Zealand’s burgeoning contemporary Māori architecture scene”. #TeTōangaroa TOA Architects are very proud to be involved in this incredible kaupapa Te Tōangaroa, a proposed downtown stadium and urban neighbourhood precinct in Tāmaki Makaurau. The difference this project would make to not only Tāmaki Makaurau but to Aotearoa as a whole would be immeasurable, socially, culturally, environmentally and economically. We are wanting to whakamana Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei during this process and are working closely with NZ Rugby. The proposed stadium will revitalise the existing rail yard areas and leave a legacy for future generations to come and provide a fan experience unlike anywhere else in the world. Tenei te mihi ki a koutou to HKS, Inc. who are world leaders in stadium design as well as feasibility, you could say if HKS is involved it will fly ! We also wish to mihi the design team Buchan, Aurecon, Boffa Miskell Limited, Robert Bird Group and Barker & Associates

TOA Architects reposted this
Te Taumata o Kupe Nuku by TOA Architects is a remarkable project, an education centre established following decades of work, commitment and perseverance from Te Mahurehure community. As part of the wider marae complex, Taumata o Kupe embodies the spirit of Kupe and represents his journey to Aotearoa. The unique external form frames stories and histories embedded in the glass window wall, which in turn projects shadows deep into the building interior where a collection of dynamic spaces and volumes provide for a variety of uses and functions. It establishes a new home and a new way of informing and defining the future for the people of Te Mahurehure Marae and the wider community of Tāmaki Makaurau. Kia ora koutou katoa. In collaboration with Black Interiors and Gensler, TOA Architects were engaged by EY to design and incorporate Te Ao Māori into their Pōneke office fit-out. An authentic cultural design process was taken to incorporate and embed significant kōrero tuku iho into the very fabric of the design. These kōreros were gifted to the project through wānanga with the local Te Atiawa historian and carver Ihaia Puketapu. Ngā mihi ki ngā kaimahi katoa i hāpai i tēnei kaupapa hirahira. TOA are also proud of the massive achievement of being finalists in the Timber Unlimited awards for this mahi. Tuia i runga! Tuia i raro! Tuia i roto! Tuia i waho! Tuia te hereherenga rino, hāngai ki tūāwhakarere! Haumie! Hui e! Taiki e! Always great to see behind the scenes photos from Black Steel Mobile Ltd and the wider construction team who worked on Te Kāinga Atawhai, a papakāinga we have been working on over the past 3 years at Te Mahurehure Cultural Marae. With a challenging creekside site, this irregular pentagon shaped steelwork enabled us to provide an extensive outdoor communal space for whānau, serving 14 kāinga.
