In honour of World Bee Day today, GIST Impact is celebrating the substantial economic contribution of our pollinators. Did you know the total value of pollination provided by bees for crops is estimated at around 200 billion dollars? That’s close to a tenth of the total value of our agricultural crops globally. But who pays for that? Has a bee ever sent you an invoice? This is an example of the economic invisibility of nature. Join us in recognising the true value contribution of our natural world today by sharing this video to your networks. #WorldBeeDay #Bees #Sustainability #Pollinators #impactvaluation

🌟𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒🌟 GIST Impact was pleased to sponsor Environmental Finance’s annual event in New York this week, where over 200 senior leaders in the investment community came together to discuss the future of natural capital and its significance for investors. Our VP and Head of Biodiversity Products Thomas Moran participated in an insightful panel on "Understanding Biodiversity Portfolio Risks and Disclosure of Nature-Related Impacts and Dependencies”, alongside experts from WWF, CDP, The Rockefeller Foundation, and Manulife Investment Management. A few key takeaways from the discussion: 📍𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 are vitally important when assessing nature-related risks and opportunities (as opposed to climate risks that are more universal). Investors really need to understand where an asset is located to fully account for ecosystem and biodiversity impacts and dependencies. 📊 Disclosure initiatives like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and CDP are encouraging more 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 on natural capital impacts, which will help investors better analyse risks as well as opportunities across their portfolios. 📈 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝-𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬, such as potentially disappeared fraction of species (PDF), are critical for helping investors quantify corporate impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity. But challenges remain due to the lack of standardisation and limited asset-level data. 🌐 The panel stressed the relevance of 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬, not just those traditionally associated with nature. Investors should be asking where their business interacts with nature and identifying those priority geographies. Thanks again to Environmental Finance for hosting us and we look forward to continuing these important discussions in the weeks and months to come! Some exciting developments on our CSRD double materiality assessment tool coming soon - stay tuned! 👇

We're updating the white paper for our CSRD double materiality assessment tool, in light of last week's Board meeting on the topic by EFRAG. "Scientific consensus" is a term that keeps catching my eye in EFRAG's implementation guidance. Here's one reference in full (Feb 2024 MAIG paper): "when there is an established scientific consensus about the severity of a particular kind of global and localised environmental impact, the undertaking can conclude that it is, indeed, material without an in-depth analysis of scale, scope and irremediability.” Our tool addresses this exact point. We source data on 14,500+ companies about their sustainability performance, and use scientifically-backed and geographically-accurate impact models to assess the impact materiality. Looking at the broader regulatory environment, the emphasis on science is growing, as CSRD is not the only regulation signalling the need for a scientific basis of sustainability disclosures and services. One key example: the text of the provisional agreement for the EU's new ***ESG ratings regulations*** (released Feb 2024), which would require ESG ratings providers to disclose 'whether and how the methodologies are based on scientific evidence'. Get in touch if you want an earlier version of our white paper and to get access to some data for your CSRD programme. GIST Impact P.V. Sandeep Shraddha Mishra (PhD) Mahima Sukhdev Pavan Sukhdev

An institutional investor with a commitment to becoming nature-positive needed to assess the biodiversity footprint of their portfolio. Their goal was to inform strategic decisions - including reallocation from high- to low-impact sectors and investees, in order to de-risk and future-proof their portfolio.
