Summary

Within the New Zealand population, the prevalence of diabetes in Māori and Pacific populations is around three times higher than among other New Zealanders.

Prevalence is also high among South Asian populations.

Although type 2 diabetes is increasingly being diagnosed in young people and is related to obesity, type 1 is also increasing.

Good control of blood glucose in early life appears to be beneficial and people with better diabetes control have fewer complications.
