What’s down that dark hole? A whole underground

What’s down that dark hole? A whole underground stormwater management system! Green-Wood was delighted to host colleagues from the #RainproofNYC initiative, a working group co-facilitated and composed of NYC agencies and community leaders all focused on identifying strategies and policies to adapt our stormwater infrastructure to increased heavy rainfall. Here at Green-Wood, we’re already deeply engaged in our own Stormwater Project, kicked off in November 2023 with a goal of reducing the volume of runoff entering the City sewer system during overflow events each year by approximately 51 million gallons. Yes, MILLIONS of gallons of water are overwhelming our City’s sewer system, and we’re all working together and sharing ideas and experiences to make a change. May is #PreservationMonth! For Green-Wood, the principles of historic preservation guide us all year long. We’re grateful to our incredible department of restoration and preservation, who work tirelessly year-round to care for the thousands of historical monuments and structures across the Cemetery’s 478 acres, so that we can continue to enjoy them for many years to come! Right now, you can catch @brooklyn_conservator and students from Bridge to Crafts Careers with @obtjobs @worldmonumentsfund waxing statues and repairing masonry by the memorial for DeWitt Clinton (pictured) — preservation training in action!DeWitt Clinton held nearly every political office, including that of NYC mayor, from 1803 to 1807 (he was also governor, senator, and a presidential candidate). Popular as he was in early nineteenth-century America, he was unsuccessful in his bid for President (losing the 1812 contest to James Madison). So he turned his focus to his beloved homestate, New York. Clinton was a leading force in the development of the Erie Canal—pejoratively called “Clinton’s Ditch” by naysayers, before the incredible value of the canal was realized and understood. Clinton was reinterred at Green-Wood in the 1840s by permission of his family (he was initially interred, following his death on February 11, 1828, near Albany, NY). A bronze sculpture by Henry Kirke Brown memorializes Clinton. #historicgreenwood #greenwoodcemetery

Leonard Bernstein (the maestro!), Fred Ebb, Louis Moreau Gottschalk … you know their beloved compositions and musical works! #DidYouKnow all have something in common: they are permanent residents of Green-Wood. Hear their works performed *live* at our annual Memorial Day concert (free to all, although donations are encouraged) on May 27th (details via link in bio)! We’re thrilled to welcome back the talented high-school musicians of the ISO at Third Street Symphonic Band, led by music director Paul Corn and hosted by guest conductor Brian P. NAMING THE LOST—a community public art memorial

NAMING THE LOST—a community public art memorial to victims of the COVID-19 pandemic—returns to Green-Wood. Come to our Main Entrance at 25th Street and Fifth Avenueand linger on the sidewalk to view contributions from twenty-two community partners adorning the Cemetery’s fence. This year’s installation, A BIG, SLOW, MAJESTIC COVID MEMORIAL, Is presented in partnership between NAMING THE LOST Memorials, City Lore, Great Small Works, Mano a Mano, and The Green-Wood Cemetery, with grant funding from the Mellon Foundation. On view NOW through June 3rd.And join us on Sunday, May 19th, from 4pm to 5pm for a dedication and ACTIVATION CEREMONY of the memorial in front of Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel. The ceremony will bring together the artistic and curatorial team and community partners for an evening that will include a procession, second line, traditional singers, and a participatory ritual of remembrance.
