Workshop Session at GECon 2024 Title: Challenge based learning and collaborative teaching for an interdisciplinary and interactive learning environment Abstract: This workshop will focus on teaching activities that foster interdisciplinary teamwork experiences. We will talk about the advantages and lessons learned in interdisciplinary courses taught at the School of Engineering and Design, Technical University of Munich in collaboration with other universities. The role of learning platforms and asynchronous teaching (towards new learning), as well as the integration of open-source computational simulation tools and their development will be presented as key parts of a functional and successful learning environment. Challenge based learning will be presented for two exemplary course layouts, their projects and alternative examinations. Apart from the presentation, there will be room for sharing experiences as well as exchanging and developing ideas and strategies for future teaching formats. #education #conference #teaching

Keynote Session at GECon Teaching in the age of AI: Enhancing Education with ChatGPT and Human Engagement Rapidly emerging AI technologies are transforming educators' roles. AI tools already aid in creating engaging materials and facilitating self-study, and the future points towards personalized learning experiences tailored to individual needs. Yet, the recent reshaping of the educational landscape reminds us of the irreplaceable value of human interaction. Skills like communication, collaboration, and hands-on exploration remain central, areas where AI falls short. In this keynote, we delve into the integration of traditional teaching methods with AI, especially generative chatbots, while mindful of ethical considerations. This fusion aims to prepare educators and students for a rapidly evolving educational environment. Such a strategy not only prepares students for a future deeply intertwined with AI but also ensures they are both technically savvy and ethically aware.

Keynote Session: Encouraging Female Careers in Engineering In this talk, some experiences recently developed to make the work of female engineers visible and promote female vocations in engineering will be presented. In the field of Telecommunications, the activities carried out internationally in the Communications society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) will be discussed, to make visible the women who work in this field, through its History and Women in Communications Engineering (WICE) committees. Also, many initiatives developed to support and promote young women that are starting their careers. In a more general area of engineering and science, the experience of “A female engineer in every school” will be shared, developed by the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists (AMIT) in Spain to promote engineering vocations in girls (and also boys) at early ages. The view of the speaker about their importance and lessons learnt while developing these initiatives will be shared.

CALL FOR PAPERS The IEEE German Education Conference (GECon 2024) calls for papers in its third edition. The Conference will take place from August 5 to 7, 2024, at TU Munich, Berlin, Germany. Themed "Networking Education in Germany" the hybrid conference aims to provide a platform to discuss teaching concepts and methodologies in German academic institutions, Due to the success of GECon in 2022 (Proceedings) and 2023 (Proceedings), the conference will return. In 2024, the event will be organized by the IEEE Germany Section and locally hosted by ProLehre j Media & Didactics of Technical University of Munich and aims to: i) provide a platform to discuss teaching methodologies in German institutions, ii) foster collaboration among educational institutions, and iii) develop partnerships between academia and industry. Next to scientific submissions, the conference offers workshops and panels to interchange experiences regarding online teaching, labs, and evaluations. Submissions are invited, but not limited to, on the following topics: Remote Instruction: online laboratories, best practices on online courses, massive open online courses. Curriculum design: Novel activities in academic program design. Non-traditional teaching in engineering education: Artificial Intelligence, Gamification, Project-based learning. STEM education initiatives, e.g. K-12 education. New paradigms and technologies: Society & Industry 5.0, IoT/IoE, 5G/6G Cyber-physical systems, Digital twins. The IEEE GECon 2023 conference announces an engaging technical program full of events on Educational topics. We start our three days events with keynote speeches debating about inclusiveness, digital labs, and infrastructures in higher education. At GECon we are planning five technical sessions where researchers will present their most updated contributions to novel learning technologies, digital labs, and educational research. The conference also presents three workshops and a special young research keynote session pointing to direct work with students, online grading tools, networking among pairs, and interdisciplinary work. We hope to have very challenging and comprehensive sessions to advance Education with the German community. See you soon this August 2-4 in TU Berlin, Germany.
