Child sexual abuse material
Child sexual abuse material is defined as images or videos featuring a child who is engaged in, or depicted as being engaged in, explicit sexual activity.
Child sexual abuse material can appear online from different sources. This might include content showing sexual harassment, sexual images or harmful behavior towards children.
Sharing this content violates our policies and Facebook is committed to taking down material that is classified as child sexual abuse material.
Sharing can impact children
Research released by Facebook suggests that more than 75% of people that we reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for sharing child exploitative content shared with no apparent intention of harm. Instead, users often share this content to raise the alarm or warn friends and family. Sharing this content violates our policies, regardless of intent and Facebook removes it as soon as it is detected.
However, every child who appears in child sexual abuse material is a victim. Every comment or share, even with just friends and family, can be distressing and results in these images being spread further around the online community.
The best way to protect the children in those images and videos is to report it directly to Facebook, not show it to more people.
