History of Dasmariñas

According to Agustin de la Cavada’s Historia Geografica, Geologica y Estadistica de Filipinas, the City of Dasmariñas started as a barrio of Imus called Tampus (which means “end of the forest”) during the Spanish Colonial Rule before it was made an independent municipality. The Spanish government named the newly organized town Perez-Dasmariñas after the seventh Governor-General of the Islands, Don Gomez Perez Dasmariñas, who was responsible for rebuilding Fort Santiago. It was only during the American Occupation that the city’s name was changed again by the Americans to its current shortened form, Dasmariñas.

Dasmariñas also had many notable historical events occur within it during World War II, when the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines began and the Imperial Japanese Army garrisoned itself in the town proper. The Japanese Military Police had done multiple atrocities against the people of Dasmariñas at that time, ranging from torturing and killing suspected male residents involved in the resistance against Japanese rule to harassing citizens to sow fear and make them submit. It was through the combined efforts of Filipino guerillas and American soldiers that the Japanese Imperial Army was driven off, wherein Japanese soldiers retaliated but were eventually defeated.

Aside from the important chronicled events that took place in the City of Dasmariñas, it is also known as the Industrial Giant of CALABARZON because it is one of the most rapidly rising local government units in the province of Cavite. As an economically-progressive city, Dasmariñas has three industrial estates: the First Cavite Industrial Estate, the Dasmariñas Technopark, and the NHA Industrial Park. As more industrial estates are predicted to be built in the city, Dasmariñas City will only continue to be more tantalizing to investors and corporations as a potential source of profit.

For the benefit of the average resident and tourist within Dasmariñas, The city has numerous commercial establishments to visit in the Central Business District, including major shopping malls such as Vista Mall Dasmariñas, Robinsons Place Dasmariñas, and SM City Dasmariñas to name a few, fast food chains, groceries, convenience stores, restaurants, and other service-oriented businesses. Dasmariñas has transformed from an agricultural-based economy to an urbanized, commercialized, and industrialized municipality. The City of Dasmariñas is also dubbed as the “University Capital of Cavite” since it has the highest number of universities in the province such as Technological University of the Philippines – Cavite Campus (TUP), De La Salle University – Dasmariñas, De La Salle Medical, and Health Sciences Institute, and a lot more. The city’s rapid population growth surrounding colleges, industrial estates, and factories generates a ready market for real estate enterprises like subdivisions, condominiums, apartments, etc.

As such, when going through or heading towards a specific location in Dasmariñas, it is better to pick a time that doesn’t coincide with rush-hour traffic such as in the early morning or late at night. Traffic jams are also less likely during the weekdays, a fact that many should take advantage of to avoid any unnecessary stress and frustration.
