Testing for Covid-19

A Covid-19 case in Waikato travelled to Hawke’s Bay last week while infectious.

The person, who is one of the eight new Waikato cases reported on Thursday, had an exemption to travel and did so last week on Friday, October 15.

They then returned to Te Awamutu and tested positive. They are now isolating at home.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the person's infectious period included the time he was in Hawke's Bay.

He confirmed there were no positive Covid-19 cases in the Hawke's Bay.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said they had travelled to Hawke's Bay due to childcare arrangements.

The person’s two close contacts have been tested and both have returned negative day six results. One close contact lives in Wairoa.

Hawke's Bay DHB told 1News the two contacts returned a negative day six result and aren't symptomatic, but are isolating for a full 14-day stint.

The DHB's Medical Officer of Health, Dr Nick Jones, said the Covid-19 scare served as a "timely reminder" for Hawke's Bay.

"Today's news is a timely reminder for Hawke's Bay residents to continue to follow Level 2 Covid-19 advice when out and about."

Jones urged Hawke's Bay residents to keep a close eye on the Ministry of Health's locations of interest page as it is updated over coming days.

All eight of Thursday’s Waikato cases were found in Te Awamutu area. Seven have been linked to known cases, and investigations continue for the remaining case.

More than 3000 tests were completed in Waikato on Wednesday.

Waikato remains in Alert Level 3.
