New Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro meets the Queen

New Zealand’s incoming Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro has had her first audience with the Queen, as the pair met via video link.

During the audience Her Majesty invested Dame Cindy with the insignia of a Dame Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and of a Companion of The Queen's Service Order of New Zealand.

Dame Cindy, who spoke to The Queen from Government House in Wellington, will be sworn in as Governor General on Thursday.

Dame Cindy has had a distinguished career in academic research, holding leadership roles at several New Zealand universities.

Most recently, Dame Cindy served as chief executive of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, which advances and promotes research and scholarly activity in science, technology and the humanities, and raises public awareness and understanding of those fields.

In 2003, Dame Cindy became the first woman, and Māori, to be appointed as Children’s Commissioner, and was appointed as a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to child wellbeing and education in the New Year Honours 2021.
