Hawke's Bay Mongrel Mob chapter opens gang pad to vaccinate members

October 18, 2021

Members of Barbarians Mongrel Mob chapter say they are getting jabbed to protect their family, their jobs, and their gang mates.

A Mongrel Mob chapter in Hawke's Bay has thrown open its headquarters so members can get vaccinated against Covid-19.

President of the DVK Barbarians chapter Edwin Marsh said holding vaccinations was a way of encouraging his men to prioritise their health and that of their whānau.

"This is their home, this is why we opened up this place for our boys, some of our boys don't even have a home, this is home and we do whatever we can to look after our family, our red nation," he told Te Karere.

Mavis Mullins of Tāmaki-nui-a-Rua, who helped set up the clinic, said it was important to offer vaccinations in places where people felt comfortable.

"Looks like there will be 25 that will come through today, very proud of these men who have stepped forward," she told Te Karere.

Adele Small of the Mid-Central DHB said they had worked with iwi and Māori providers to open doors to everyone in our communities.

"With that partnership we've been able to reach right in and make sure everyone receives a vaccine."

Barbarians member Blitz said his reason for getting a jab was simple.

"I decided to get the vaccine today for my family, for my job, and for the Barbarians."

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says a vaccination target will be revealed on Friday, in order for Auckland and the rest of New Zealand to move from a restriction framework into the new 'Covid protection framework'.
