Anti-lockdown protest organisers will be charged - police

October 16, 2021

People took to the Auckland Domain to express their opinion on lockdowns, but someone took the opportunity to share a pro-jab message.

Police say charges will be coming for the organisers of the anti-lockdown protest at Auckland Domain on Saturday.

Around 2000 people gathered at the park for the protest, which police described as "a significant breach" of Alert Level 3 restrictions.

Uniformed police were in attendance, as they were at the first rally a fortnight ago.

Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki and another man were charged after the first rally with breaching the Health Act.

Tamaki was in attendance at Saturday's event, and spoke to the crowd.

No arrests were made, however, police confirmed they would be taking prosecution action against a number of individual organisers in the coming days.

Police said most people at the protest were calm and stuck to mask and social distancing rules, but it was a breach of gathering limits.

A separate rally in Auckland saw people protesting in their cars against the vaccine mandate for teachers.

The Government will make it mandatory for anyone working with children at schools and early learning centres to be vaccinated by next year.

The protest comes on Super Saturday, where people around the country are being encouraged to get a Covid-19 jab.

The number of vaccinations nationwide on Saturday passed 100,000 at around 3pm, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced.
