Woman who travelled to Northland with Covid case is symptomatic

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND - AUGUST 12: Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield speaks to media during a press conference at Parliament on August 12, 2020 in Wellington, New Zealand. COVID-19 restrictions have been reintroduced across New Zealand after four new COVID-19 cases were diagnosed in Auckland. Auckland will be placed in full lockdown for three days from midday on Wednesday, with all residents to work from home unless they are essential workers and all schools and childcare centres to close. The rest of New Zealand will be subject to Level 2 restrictions. The new cases are all in the same family, with health authorities working to trace back the source of the infection. The woman who allegedly travelled to Northland with a person who later tested positive for Covid-19 is now symptomatic for the virus.

The woman was taken into custody by police on Monday evening and is now in quarantine.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said she has been tested for the coronavirus, with the result expected later on Tuesday morning or at the 1pm Covid-19 update.

The woman was located at a West Auckland address.

The Director-General of Health says the woman, taken into police custody on Monday, is still being uncooperative.

Section 70 of the Health Act allowed police to take her into custody, force her into quarantine and get her tested, but Bloomfield said there was no law to make her talk.

"It's very challenging for our teams and I think, you know, everyone will be feeling frustrated about this because in the absence of that information (locations visited and people in contact with) we have to sort of do quite big broad things, like Northland's in an Alert Level 3 in part because of the uncertainty generated by the lack of information," he added.

Meanwhile, parts of Waikato are also at Level 3, Auckland is at Level 3 with some restrictions eased and the rest of the country is at Level 2.

Bloomfield said there was "plenty of speculation" about why the pair are being uncooperative, but he said he doesn't know why.

"These people have their reasons, our teams are very good at interviewing, building trust and if necessary using third parties to try and glean this information, so we'll just keep using every channel we can.

"We really do want to get this specific information about where they were and who they were with."

There are some locations of interest relating to the couple, including accommodation and a petrol station, on the Ministry of Health's website .
