More than 58 per cent of Dunedin's eligible population is fully vaccinated and health providers say a "Te Tiriti focus" has been key.
Shelley Kapua of Arai Te Uru Whare Hauora explained to Breakfast this was its "whānau-friendly approach" to vaccinating — making those getting a dose feel comfortable, safe and significant.
She said this approach was one of the biggest positives they have had.
Albie Laurence of Te Kāika said partnering with the local DHB back in June had allowed them to set up two mass vaccination centres.
Health authorities in the city also had a strong emphasis on getting the vaccine message out to communities, and community providers had been able to mix with those who were more vulnerable.
Laurence said a "flare in the youth" during the lockdown had helped get many students vaccinated.
Kapua and Laurence agreed a by Māori, for Māori, by Pasifika, for Pasifika, and by youth, for youth approach to the roll-out was central in getting people vaccinated.
