Boatie caught trying to flee Auckland's water boundary

Boats at low tide of Kawakawa Bay Beach, New Zealand in summer.

With Aucklanders out and about soaking up their newly found freedoms under the loosened Level 3, not all were playing by the rules.

Hundreds of boaties set out on the water for the first time in weeks, with the Coastguard reporting close to 300 vessels within the Auckland boundary.

1News understands some have been caught attempting to cross the city's water boundary and escape restrictions.

One boat departed from Kawakawa Bay, stopping just shy of Coromandel township before being turned away.

Police confirmed the boaties have been issued an infringement notice for flouting the Alert Level 3 Order.
