72 for 72: Charity running for three days straight to raise suicide awareness

October 7, 2021

Lads without Labels are running for 72 hours to highlight the grim statistic that 72 per cent of suicides in NZ are male.

A not-for-profit charity at the University of Canterbury dedicated to improving men’s mental health is currently hitting the road with 72-hour marathon to raise awareness about male suicide in New Zealand.

Lads without Labels are currently out in force at the University of Canterbury campus raising funds and awareness to combat the statistic that 72 per cent of all suicides in New Zealand are male.

The group are doing so by running a 3km route through the University Campus for 72 hours with at least one person on the course at all times during that period.

The event started on Wednesday but organisers Sam Watkins and George Glover told Breakfast on Thursday they're still feeling great despite a monster effort put in yesterday.

"Twenty-hour hours a day for three days straight, we've got someone at least running the loop," Watkins said.

"At the moment, we've got about 30 which is great and they're all supporting each other.

"It's no small feat, but we're making great headway on it so far."

A group of runners participate in the 72 for 72 event at the University of Canterbury.

Watkins said there are between 200 and 300 runners participating in the event with over 2200 laps already clocked up after one day.

"I'm not going to do the maths but that's a lot of kilometres."

Glover has contributed to that plenty.

"I said 'we'll do 50 [laps] and I was running for about six hours yesterday," Glover said.

Watkins said any support for their cause can be donated via their Givealittle and would be greatly appreciated with all funds raised going towards mental health at the university.
