So the Police Minister does accept the premise of the question over gangs now?

Government $562 million police, crime package amid gang, guns, ram raid spree

More than $550 million in funding for more frontline police, a new firearms unit and a package to help businesses protect themselves from ram raids has been promised today in a Government Budget pre-announcement.

Police Minister Poto Williams made the announcements in Auckland alongside Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis and Justice Minister Kris Faafoi.

Police and Corrections will get $562 million over four years.

Williams said there would be help to support businesses to protect themselves from ram raiders – something that has become an increasing problem in recent months. However, there were no specific details.

Last month the Minister was denying the premise of the question that there was an increase in gang activity, this month she’s scrambling to shut down ram raids and gang violence.

The political problem for Labour is that they are seen as soft on crime (despite bashing the Parliament protestors) and this is problematic because there is about to be an explosion and spike in violence.

I think the adults need to take over the ram raid debate and seek means to de-escalate this rather than add fuel to the fire.

I appreciate and fully acknowledge seeing children commit organised crime like this is genuinely concerning to the wider community.

But I beg us all to take a deep breath, appreciate the uniqueness of this moment and the extreme pressure on so many people right now.

I’ve said from the beginning that Covid is a triple peaked crisis, the first was the physical impact on physical health, the second was the economic impact and the third was the impact on mental health.

Human Beings are social creatures, the worst punishment is isolation – we’ve all gone through a unique universal experience and it’s damaged many.

We are seeing that mental health pressure exploding everywhere from the Dumb Lives Matter protest on Parliament’s Lawns, to domestic violence, to fights in Supermarkets to a spike in crime, to the increasingly toxic online misogyny,  to the Wellington Middle Class Marxists screaming to send in the military to bash protestors they didn’t like.

Everyone has been impacted mentally by these unprecedented times and the true cost is yet to be felt.

Polling for the Mental Health Foundation found 36 per cent of people surveyed were experiencing poor emotional wellbeing, up from 27 per cent a year ago.

Add to all of this stress the enormous jump in rents and cost of living crisis and you have desperation, anxiety, anger and fear all combining into the current maelstrom.

These damaged kids need our help, their criminality is a reflection of a gated neoliberal society who enrich the wealthy while providing crumbs for the poor.

The economic outlook is far more grim than we are admitting and these pressures are only building.

We need alternatives, not more of the same failed conservative social policy knee jerks.

With the 501s, Labour need a completely different tactic.

The sudden forced importation of huge swathes of hardened Australian crims into the NZ criminal scene is a unique event and they bring with them a level of violence unseen before in the NZ criminal underworld and that isn’t the fault of Labour!

These new Australian connected gangs don’t use Chinese organised crime syndicates for their meth, they have Mexican cartel links who are ultra violent and produce a higher grade meth for a far cheaper price and that the explosion of organised hits and assassinations that have plagued the NZ criminal fraternity for the last 5years is being driven by these new Australian imports.

These new 501 syndicates fly under the radar, unlike the Rebels and Comancheros, they don’t display patches and move with cunning and strategic purpose to strengthen supply chains and market protection.

When alpha gangs like the HeadHunters and Hells Angels are defending their HQs with steal plating after attacks you know shit has gotten real.

Bad news is that this dynamic is about to get far, far, far, far, far worse…

New Aussie deportation laws could see more Kiwis thrown out

The Australian Senate’s due to vote on controversial new migration laws on Tuesday, that could see more New Zealanders deported under the existing 501 policy.

…that’s right folks, the 501 law that picks people Australia doesn’t like and who have had absolutely no upbringing in NZ and dumps them back here with all the social damage of using a hammer on an infant is about to get far worse!

Most of these guys have no community in NZ and they are threatened with exile on a pacific torture prison if they don’t accept a flight back to NZ.

One could make the argument that seeing as these sons and daughters of NZ were raised by Australia’s society, then their criminality is on Australia NOT NZ!

We also have to appreciate that the last 2 years of covid has created a level of desperation that is fuelling crime…

Auckland crime spikes as police tied up with growing number of welfare calls

Aucklanders are calling for more police on their streets, with local officers often tied up on welfare jobs relating to mental health and family harm.

Heart of the City chief executive and Auckland mayoral candidate Viv Beck wrote to Police Minister Poto Williams in December about the lack of police “on the beat” in Auckland CBD.

…none of this sudden explosion of crime generated by the 501 syndicates is on Labour, this is a unique event in the criminal underworld but the politics of claiming Labour are ‘soft on crime’ is too easy for National to resist.

Such a juxtaposition brings us to Luxon’s response to the 501s on breakfast last month…

Luxon wants ‘tough on crime’ approach to 501 deportees

National leader Christopher Luxon wants a “tough on crime” approach to 501 deportees, as Australian lawmakers consider proposals to strengthen its ability to cancel visas which could see a large increase in people with tenuous links deported to New Zealand.

…Matty kept asking the question ‘shouldn’t we have more wrap around services’ to which Christian Lex Luthor thundered ‘No Matty! Tough on crime’ blah blah blah”.

Here’s the problem with Luxon’s position, he clearly doesn’t understand Matty’s point nor does he seem to appreciate the process. These 501s are literally dumped off at the airport, given $300 and told, ‘good luck’.

They haven’t committed crimes in NZ, so we don’t have any real power over them, with zero oversight, bugger all resourced as a welcome and barely any family connections in NZ, our current system almost incentivises these guys to go straight to hardened violent crime.

If there is no off ramp provided for these guys, they walk straight into the criminal world.

I agree that there is going to need to be an organised crime tactical force akin to Simon Bridge’s much mocked Raptor Force simply because the level of professionalism, sophistication and violence from the 501 syndicates demands it, but we can’t go funding a vast militarisation of the Police without an equally vast sum spent on trying to reform and help these 501s when they first re-enter NZ society before we need to use Raptor Force.

Make no mistake, the gang war is coming, the fight over the meth trade will only heat up and the Police Intelligence Unit is going to have to lift its game…

Gang Intelligence Centre leadership concerns revealed in document release

New Zealand’s Gang Intelligence Centre has been blighted by poor leadership and has been struggling to reduce the harm caused by organised crime.

Multiple sources RNZ has talked to said the leadership of the Gang Intelligence Centre was “clueless”, and one person said it was run by a bunch of buffoons.

Leadership were said to have no understanding of the gang environment, which in turn meant the centre was failing to have an impact on the harm being caused by gangs.

…when you have gangs spraying other gang pads with semi-automatics, you have lost control of the situation.

This would not be happening if there was a competent Gang Intelligence Centre. The point is to never let shit get to this level.

This lack of leadership is terrifying on a range of fronts.

The first is of course the eruption of gang violence we are witnessing due to the 501s taking over domestic gangs.

The second is that we have handed Police a bewilderingly huge power in the form of facial recognition software they gained from a corrupt company without any sign off from politicians or the people.

So we have a Gang Intelligence Centre armed with the most powerful mass surveillance system who have no fucking idea how to deal with the looming gang war!

Everyone feeling safe yet?

What isn’t helping any of this is Police Minister Poto Williams…

Police Minister blocks MP from meeting commanders, says cops ‘too busy’

Police Minister Poto Williams has refused to let National’s police spokesman meet the Commissioner or any district commanders, saying cops are too busy for him.

Mark Mitchell took over the National police portfolio late last year and has cried foul over Williams’ repeated refusals of his requests.

The Opposition MP and Williams also had a feisty exchange in the House today, where the minister accused former cop Mitchell of “disrespecting” police.

…Look, no one likes Mark Mitchell, and nor should they, but he is the Opposition spokesperson on Police, he has to be allowed to meet the top brass and talk to them.

This is basic stuff and yet Poto is refusing to allow him to meet Police and then has the audacity to accuse Mitchell of ‘disrespecting’ police.

Mark Mitchell worships the bloody Police, of all the things to claim he is, ‘disrespecting Police’ ain’t one of them.

This is Poto Williams playing petty games and thinking they are Machiavellian masterstrokes and then when she gets caught out in Parliament doing it, resorts to name calling Mark Mitchell.

It’s petty and it’s beneath the mana of Parliament and the office she holds.

Let Mark Mitchell meet Police and criticise his actual policy suggestions rather than play games and name call!

In light of the petty spite Trevor Mallard showed during the Dumb Lives Matter protest, do we honestly think Labour should be playing this type of politics?

If we are not going to seriously tackle the reason why the gang wars are brewing then we won’t actually stop it from erupting.

The Police have the powers for this, but no fresh thinking.

Here’s my prediction. The Police will keep swinging at every patched member while the unpatched 501s continue to take over the industry with bewildering levels of violence until some white middle class kids get shot in the cross fire and the entire nation goes nuts and National and ACT go to the polls demanding the arming of Police and a vast overreaction of power is given to a newly armed police force that will see a sudden spike of poorly trained cops shooting everything that moves.

  1. Yes, the benevolent Chinese organised crime syndicates… real estate agents included. Who needs a country when you have Chinese organised crime syndicates voting for National.

  2. The fact that Kelvin and Chris both look so scared and uncertain in this photo isn’t reassuring, but it might be better than having misplaced confidence. Still not a good look. Perhaps they know that knee jerk legislation is often a mistake.

Williams is wrong – or may be right- in stopping the dog man of Iraq from meeting with senior cops, but it’s a total waste of police time too when this thin-lipped jerk can’t really do anything with any info except pot stir, and the police are unlikely to give him the means to do so. At this, point I’d let him just to shut him up and stop his tedious grandstanding – isn’t he a Simon Lusk “Dirty Politics” grad ? How’d he get elected anyway ? Take his bone away.

    • And wasn’t ‘mainstream’ LINOs answer to this issue delivered by Mr Fixit, Ginga Skippy that they’ll invest millions in Truancy Officers!

      Yeah Right! That’ll work!

Why don’t they just throw $30b and a house building programme and get these kids swinging a hammer instead.

Couped up in a motel for year’s is bound to drive families nuts.

  3. Dear oh dear, this announcement is cynical and awfully amateur.

Do Labour’s strategists really think this reheated announcement of other announcements is going to bear the slightest bit of scrutiny?

    $550 odd million.
Divided between Justice, Corrections, Courts and finally police.
    Over 5 years
Of that $580 million $208 million has been earmarked for a firearms bureaucracy
Leaving 250 divided by 4 over 5 years or approximately and generously estimaing $13 million per department per year.
But subtract GST and other taxes and we are probably in the vicinity of 8-10 million, per year, per department.

And don’t forget, there is NO plan to go with this minuscule amount so even as pathetic as it is, we all know the amount promised will probably never be spent!

Instead of insulting our intelligence with this kind of dishonesty, take crime seriously, stop being kind to criminals and stop Jacinda pretending she has any idea on the drivers of crime or how to fix it!

Honestly Labour, it’s 2022 not 2018, we see straight through your horse shit nowadays!

    • X-ray. They all know the drivers of crime, Labour and the Nats, and they hope that we don’t. The systemic societal issues have long been enabled by both parties’ negligence and incompetence – skating along from one electoral cycle to the next. The Greens could have made an incisive difference, but they didn’t. The Maori Party is just as bad and silly. None of the politicians seem to have competent advisors, they might just have PR people.

    • The firearms register was already announced for next year so this is a re announcement to look like they are doing something – further bashing of the law abiding while criminal gun use runs amok.

Incidentally this government in its last term promised to create an independent authority to administer firearms licensing but have reneged and given it back to police who are understaffed, were allegedly spending half their previous firearms budget on other stuff not licensing and previously though firing vetters was smart and so failed massively before Chch.
They had also previously got the last gun register ditched because it was inaccurate and too difficult.
      Maybe this time around?

    • I note my error. It should read $350ish million over 5 years divided by 4, = 17.5 million per dept, per year, less tax.

  4. LOL. The government’s response can be summed up as:

Panic, panic, panic followed by Poor man’s Gordon Brown getting out is money spraying machine. The extra funding will be as effective as the almost half a billion dollars spent on the 3 waters marketing campaign.

    • Confíscate property as pursuant to investigations and send it away in anonymous mail packages. Lock down bank accounts so crimiminals have to deal in cash while having their stuff stripped. Publicize names/shame and insult them on the television. Lots of options here, honestly.

      • They are effectively domestic terrorists (at least the old definition of one). Treat them as such.

Agree lots of options here although none are palatable to labour and our Glorious Leader……

        • do ramraiders have a political agenda frank?
can you show me their manifesto?

then no, not really terrorists as such, are they?

  5. Potato was hauled over coals and told ‘You’re costing us the election. Fix it and here’s some quick money.’ What a fucking joke and it sums up 5 years of this govt. They will get shredded at the election .

    • Well SK if you read the article on the Gang Intelligence Unit this was a creation of Judith Collins in 2016. Probably something she was doing in preparation for the 2017 election. It will probably be vintage National chest beating to say how tough on crime they were/are. That’s really code for a bunch of ex cops offering their services and making good cash. Kind of like the 120 mil on p testing for houses.

      They are all the same

  6. Robbo is splashing the COVID cash like a mad man. He is spending like there is no tomorrow. The guy needs to be reined in, all that money has gone to his head.

  7. Fuck me! I had to do a double-take on that picture!
Poto in her SIS disguise! Those secret eye-spy glasses! How much of this budget did they carve out for them?
Are they those google glasses that are hooked up to the internet and display the net onto the lens so you can walk, talk, and view shit just like being on a laptop or mobile smartphone?!
Is that what all spies will be issued with so that can stay connected!

    Aue!

  8. The Announcement Party strikes again.
Step 1: Deny there is a problem and call David Seymour a racist.
Step 2: Realise no one believes them, panic and call anyone who disagrees a racist.
Step 3: Accept there is a problem but claim it’s caused by Systematic Racism (TM) and inequality
Step 4: Scramble together $600 million over 5 years, most of which will be eaten up by a new bureaucracy.
Step 5: Announce the new bureaucracy without any detail.
Step 6: Get Jacinda to ask everyone to be kind on TV while re-announcing that the problem is solved.
Step 7: Condemn David Seymour, Christopher Luxon and any critic as a racist.

  9. “One could make the argument that seeing as these sons and daughters of NZ were raised by Australia’s society, then their criminality is on Australia NOT NZ!”

One could equally make the argument that it’s their Kiwi parents whose raised them, and they’re the ones to blame for how their children turned out.

Not that I want these 501s to return to NZ. Not at all! Manus Island would be preferable.

But let’s put the blame where it really lies.

  10. more cops is a start but what’s needed is local cops on a regular beat, who get to know the locals good and bad, more bodies in jam butty cars will achieve nothing…it’s community knowledge that makes effective local policing..I understand this is more difficult in regional areas, but for urban areas and towns it’s not only do-able but essential….more money on ‘intelligence IT’ is a waste, criminal intelligence is local cops on a regular foot beat….but they have to be good not ‘box ticked’ placeholders.

  11. ” National leader Christopher Luxon wants a “tough on crime” approach to 501 deportees ”

Well here we go again , the same old shit being now peddled by a another born to rule Nast Nat politican !

At a time when we need Leadership and guts we get the same old limp wristed , play it safe National leader who just wants to get to the ninth floor to enrich his donors and their agenda’s without actually doing anything meaningful.

But its easy to promise harsher sentences and look tough than actually confront Australia’s policy here.

Luxon and his colleagues want the this gang warfare because it does not touch their wealthy ” gated supporters ” until it starts to impact the ” struggling middle ” and promising harsher sentences like they always do wont mean a damn thing.

Australia plays this country like a fiddle.

Cause we have no self respect or a backbone.

  12. Why is it that Labour policy announcements always focus on the dollar amount but lack detail of how the money will actually be spent? Could it be that they don’t actually know?

    • JohnO
Because they hope it fools the masses into loving them. Like a clickbait headline. It won’t work. Labour will be shredded. Lots and lots of Labour MPs will lining up at WINZ to get a taste of their own medicine.

  13. Its too late to tackle the gang problem and I guess we will have to learn to live with them. Gangs have been left to fester for decades in this country without any attempt to stop their growth. Any attempt at doing so would have probably have set off a race war and no one in power has the fortitude or stomach to take the steps needed to stop the growth. The Dutch court ruled that the Rebels were an affront to civil society and ordered them to disband. Imagine a court in this country telling the Mongrel Mob to disband. Instant violent reaction guaranteed. King Cobras. I guess that is Samoa’s way of saying thanks for the opportunities offered by us to them by allowing Samoan’s to immigrate here. Ditto the Crips and Bloods and every other dipshit street gang of South Auckland. They have caused mayhem in Auckland for decades and we’ve stood back and continue to allow them to expand. I guess there’s a reason we have the 2nd highest rate of gang membership in the world. As a country we have let them thrive. Last weekend we had PC Plod gloating that they had written a handful of infringement notices to the Headhunters. Yeah. That showed them. Now that they are linking up with trans national drug cartels its only a matter of time before corruption seeps in to the police and high ranking government officials and then the rot really sets in.
