Can I still make my article open access if my article is already published?

Generally, Elsevier doesn't offer authors the option in hybrid journals to retrospectively make an article gold open access after publication. However, it may be possible to make your article open access during a limited period of time after publication.

If you want to request open access retrospectively this has to be according to Elsevier's retrospective open access policy. For more detail about Elsevier Pricing Policy please click here. To request open access retrospectively you are required to:

  • Have published an article in the current year. In this case, you are allowed to make your article open access up until January 31 of the next year. For example, if your article has an issue cover date of March 2014, then it can be made as an open access article up until the January 31, 2015.
  • Check whether your journal supports open access and what the open access fee is by consulting the open access section from your journal's Guide for Authors. To access your journal's Guide for Authors, go to the journal homepage directly or search journals alphabetically.
  • Check whether you received the link to the Rights and Access form. The corresponding author will receive the link to the Rights and Access form via email once the article had been accepted and entered into our production system.

How

To request open access, find the link you received in your email to the Rights and Access form. Order open access by completing all the navigational steps on the form under the 'Rights and Access' section. If the form has previously been submitted you will need to make the necessary changes and resubmit.

If you don't have access to this form, please contact us using the email option at the bottom of this page and provide your article reference, DOI or full article title. The link to the Rights and Access form will then be re-sent to the corresponding author on request and open access ordered.

If you have older articles or have missed the deadline and still wish to share these articles, we have the green open access option which enables you to post your accepted author manuscript.

If you would like more information on green open access, please visit the open access page from our website.
