Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

Hi Juan,

We do have a couple questions that could help us update our news:

1. In general, how does this work in light of the fact that users can access several Moodle sites from the app? Let's say I'm accessing a Free, a Pro and a Premium site from the same app, how many offline courses do I get to download?

2. Do I get to choose which ones I can download? Can institutions decide which courses are downloadable and which ones are not?

3. How are the devices getting push notifications determined, is it a first-come, first-served basis? Are devices from all OS (including Moodle Desktop) counted individually? Could an admin edit the list of devices deserving of push notifications? Are there limits on the number of times a device is deserving of push notifications? If I'm a user with a device deserving push notifications, can I transfer my push notification rights onto another device without admin intervention?

4. Do the "custom strings" refer to custom language packs, to the wording of courses, or somewhere else? Do the pricing tiers affect the multilanguage features of the app?

5. What are the features that can be disabled? And on the Free app, does it mean I am "forced" to be able to use these features?
UPDATE: I've answered it myself. Could be a good idea to add a link to this list on the post and FAQ
https://docs.moodle.org/38/en/Moodle_app_guide_for_admins#Disabled_features

6. How are the Moodle Partner sites deserving of the Premium app access determined? Is hosting the operative word, or can for example a Moodle Partner client from an on-premise solution be entitled to the Premium app?

7. Does access to the Premium app for MoodleCloud users apply to the Free tier of MoodleCloud?

Hi Cristian,

thanks for your questions:

1. Limitations apply per site. So if you have 3 sites configured in your app, and the 3 are free for example. You will be able to download 2 courses per site. If you add a new Premium site, for that one you will be able to download all the courses for offline (and still being able to download 2 courses maximum on the others).

2. No, right now it is not possible. That's something we have in our roadmap but it will require changes in the Moodle LMS code.

3. Yes, first-come. If you are on a Free plan, the first 50 users to receive a notification every Month will still receive notifications for the rest of the Month. Moodle Desktop is not counted, iOS and Android devices add up.  Site administrators can completely disable/enable Mobile notifications if they want, but there is not an option to just block particular users to receive notifications.

4. 5. They all refer to the link you pointed out (I just updated the FAQ): https://docs.moodle.org/38/en/Moodle_app_guide_for_admins#Disabled_features

6. Only sites hosted by Moodle Partners. We wanted to find a simple criterion that allowed us to detect active subscriptions/clients in an easy way

7. Yes

Juan, thank you for the FAQ and info.

We are a Non Profit using moodle and i Understand that we could be eligible for free usage of the app paid plans. I see that the process or revision of eligibility could last weeks. What happens in the meantime, should we pay an initial one yer to allow for usage during this time ?
Thank you!

Hi Juan --

The FAQ states: "How can I upgrade to one of the plans? "During the last week of March 2020, site administrators will be provided with a link to the Moodle App Portal, where they will be able to sign up for a plan."

So the ability to sign up (and pay) for a plan will be available at the end of March, yet this change goes into effect April 2. It can take weeks at my large public university in California to get approval for things like this.

We understand and support what's happening here. We're happy to upgrade to a premium plan and support Moodle and the app. But we are very concerned about the rush and this transition strategy. Can you talk more about this?

Thanks very much.... Brian

Hi Brian,

We will allow payment in the apps portal via bank transfer for Premium plans. We will require a minimum of a two years Premium subscription, to cover all the administrative work and bank fees.

Once you have signed-up and choose to pay via bank transfer, you will automatically get the Premium plan enabled for your site so your users will be able to enjoy all the Premium features of the app. Notice that you'll have 4 weeks for processing payment. If after those 4 weeks we haven't received the payment yet, the plan will be canceled and you will get back to the free plan.

I'll update the FAQs with this information.

Hi Juan --

Thanks for the information. I have one more quick question. Do the new service plans also impact Moodle 3.7 sites? We are still on Moodle 3.7 and will be until we upgrade to 3.8 in July 2020. I ask because the Moodle mobile FAQ for 3.7 (https://docs.moodle.org/37/en/Moodle_app_FAQ) doesn't mention the new service plans (as of 3/9/2020) -- only the 3.8 FAQ includes this information.

Thanks in advance... Brian

Hi Brian,

yes, this is impacting all Moodle versions supported by the app, maybe I should clarify that also in the FAQ.

Please note that the FAQ page is temporary, we are working in a Moodle App portal where we will add this information (and linked it from FAQs etc..)

Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

by Gerald Grow -

Dumb question around the word "app."

Do the new Moodle plans apply to the software package that has long been known as Moodle, or only to sites that use the Moodle Mobile App?

Another way of asking this: If all students access a Moodle site using a browser, will this site be affected by the changes and their restrictions in, say, the number of customizable language strings?

Or do the new plans apply only if students use the Moodle mobile app to access the Moodle site?

Is the "Moodle code" that we install on linux now called the "Moodle App"?

Sorry to ask, but I'm confused.

This is just use of the Mobile App. use of Moodle on your web server, and the students'/teachers' web browser, is not affected.

Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

by Josh Manders -

We have been using the *free* unbranded version of the app for a few years. I've managed to do some VERY basic style changes via a custom css file that is within our LMS (Mobile Appearance - mobilecssurl).

Our instance is currently hosted by OpenLMS (now moving to LTG https://www.edsurge.com/news/2020-03-10-blackboard-to-sell-open-lms-product-for-31-7-million). Because OpenLMS is no longer an official Moodle Partner (LTG isn't currently either), would we suddenly be required to pay Moodle ~$550 to retain that very basic feature come April 2nd?!

Long of the short(er): Are these changes going to break our App?!

Hey Josh,

The changes won't break your app, it will still work fine ... but you will lose the Premium styling feature that we have been giving away for free until now.

Customers of Moodle Partners or MoodleCloud will get Premium for free, including this CSS styling feature.

We would love you to contribute to Moodle, yes, either by paying for a Premium app (it's a low cost in the scheme of things) or by moving away from LTG to one of our many Moodle Partners.  smile

(As you pointed out, so-called OpenLMS are not a Partner, do not contribute anything to Moodle, and I can tell you, won't ever be (despite anything they may tell you), so I would very much encourage you to move away from them if you are able - contact me direct if you want to discuss it or need help.)

No-one likes to pay for services, but we must - that's how the economy works.   Over 90% of Moodle-using institutions do not contribute anything back to Moodle, this change to one of our services is designed to make it easier for everyone to choose to support the truly open source software they use, and to help us make it better and better for you.

Best regards,
Martin from Moodle

Thanks Martin for the reply.

We've got a list of alternative hosts that we're considering but we may pay on our own if it comes down to it. The app really could use some attention (can't stand the dropdown nav change away from Moodle classic) and the only way that's going to happen is dollars and/or somebody's time.

Hi Andrea,

please, read this announcement: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=398376#p1606956

Basically, if you register for free you won't have any restriction applied on your app during April. We are still opening the Moodle Apps portal registration (hopefully today or tomorrow) so you will have enough time to register your site for free and then consider if you want to upgrade to a paid plan for May onward

it seems that due to the current global situation, one of our critical services provider has not been able to setup the required systems on time.

We've created an account and are trying to go through the verification process. We've added the snippet of HTML, as requested, to appropriate place in our Moodle configuration and verified that it is showing on page loads. However, your site repeated claims unable to verify with the message "We could not validate your site. Please try again.".  I'm guessing it's because our Moodle site requires login to access it and redirects to our SSO server if not logged in.

How do we verify our site? Is there an alternate way to verify?

Hi Juan,

We've begun the process with Moodle HQ to acquire our own branded Moodle App. But for the moment, we've not finished our Apple Developper account registration, and won't be able to do so in april, due to Covid-19 crisis.

Do we need to register our Moodle site, or is it not necessary to still use the standard Moodle App (with all possibilities)?

We also have two other Moodle sites. If i've well understood, registration is per site? So i suppose we need to register them, if we want to be able to benefit of all possibilities?

Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my issue Juan.

I changed the MoodleApp Portal password successfully for my username "HeavenlyCare@outlook.com" (site address "https://www.HeavenlyCareAdultFamilyHome.com/moodle30"). To be sure, I took a screen print of the new password and could validate it in the Microsoft Edge browser.

When trying to login with the new password, the message "Invalid Login, Please try again" appears.

Interestingly, when I purposely enter a wrong password, the message "Wrong user/password" appears.

Considering the comment from Koen Roggemans (Mar 29 1:21 AM), I tried registering the MoodleCloud site "HCI.MoodleCloud.com" to see if the same problem would occur.  It was successfully activated and validated. When I logged out and then tried to log back in, the same message occurred, "Invalid Login, Please try again".

I must be doing something obviously wrong if no one else is experiencing this. The "username" is our email, correct? I wouldn't mind to send you the password if that would help in anyway.

Cookies are enabled.

Praying for your country!

Some questions:

  • do I need to have a different email for each site - organisation i manage?
  • I forgot my username - can I use my email adress to log in or is there a procedure to recover my username?
  • Hong Kong does NOT have zip or postal codes. How to fill in the form without breaking my user obligation to be true, accurate and complete.
  • the verification process for a NGO or non-profit organisation is per country and may take several weeks. Why is there still no information available on the process to qualify?

Hi Renaat,

1 - You don't need to have a different email, you can add multiple sites to the same organisation (the first one you created)
2 - Your username is your email address
3 - Oh, I didn't know that just add 000
4 - It is going to take some time to set-up a solid process, please note that is not an easy task (other big companies has also complex processes and similar times). We are working on a process to be used as a whole as a company (not only for us). This is not an issue during April since all the plans come without restrictions but we are willing to have the process finished in a couple of weeks.

Hi Phil,

the subscription is per domain, please note that the main differentiation factor we consider for the different plans is the number of active devices receiving notifications an that's per site.

However, we have some plans for creating bundles.

Remember also that you can always get a Branded Moodle App for your institution, BMAs support multiple sites (see for example Coventry University https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moodle.coventry&hl=en)

Hi,

I notice that there does not seem to be an option at the moment to upgrade and pay for any of the pro or premium plans. As you can imagine, budgets are getting very tight with demands from all sorts of places. Having obtained permission to upgrade our sites, it is imperative that we are able to pay for these now, or at least raise an invoice for payment in order for the money to be committed.

We really need the option to upgrade and pay by the end of tomorrow given that we will be closed for Easter after tomorrow! It all seems a little rushed in the current climate and if you were not able to enable payments immediately, then the roll out of this should have been delayed indefinitely until the situation has been resolved.

Hi Tim.

due to the global lockdown, our payment provider is experiencing some issues that are delaying the creation of our merchant account for processing payments. This is unexpected since we requested it more than one month ago (with enough time provided previous experience with them)

I will contact you privately to generate a manual invoice doing your time requirements. We are also exploring a way to keep those who are going to pay via bank transfer under a premium subscription for an extended period of time

Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

Tim Ellis forwarded on your response about being able to pay via an invoice and apparently there is a 25 Euro admin fee. It would be good to know if this is per instance or a one-off cost. It is frustrating that you give such a short window of time in which to take up the premium offer and you have not provided an easy way for payment to be made

On a broader note, I know that Moodle needs to generate revenue, but in the current circumstances, the timing of this could be better as Institutions move more courses online and are facing a period of greater financial uncertainty. Am surprised that this was not delayed until later in the year.

Best Steve

Thanks Juan,

It looks like the process for setting up Moodle pty as a supplier on our procurement system will be a protracted process and so it is likely, given the short time span, that we will be paying by credit card for this year and then maybe via invoice for subsequent years. Do you have a sense of when your credit card payments will be available?

Re: Heads Up! New Moodle App Plans announcement

by Juan Leyva -
Picture of Core developers Picture of Moodle HQ Picture of Particularly helpful Moodlers Picture of Plugin developers Picture of Testers
Hi Steve and Tim,

first of all, we are very sorry for all the inconvenience.

As I mentioned before, we requested and provided with enough time to our external payment providers everything that was needed. Payment should've been activated around the 24 of March and we've been promised (again and again) that it will be ready soon, we can't really know when it will be available because we've been told several times it will be in a few days but it seems that the global situation it is also affecting their business and response times.

We are aware of all the havoc caused by the COVID situation (we have been heavily impacted as well) and also the difficulties for public institutions for processing payments, this is why we decided in advance to provide everything without restrictions for registered sites during April to try to reduce the impact on all the organisations using Moodle.
Apart from that, for payment via bank transfer, we also decided to automatically activate the Premium plan when the portal will generate the invoice and we will keep it active until payment is received (with some time limitations, around 4 weeks should be reasonable)

Moodle it is also exposed to all the financial uncertainty, please note that we give our products for free, and also services (like the Mobile notifications infrastructure, MoodleCloud, etc..) that costs us money (much more now that we have more and more users).

Regarding payment:

For payments via bank transfer to Moodle Pty Ltd (Australia), a minimum of a two years Premium subscription plus additional administration fees will be required (25€). The administration fee is not per site, it is just for processing the invoice and covering international bank transfer fees.

What are other ways to pay?
Using a credit card.
Via your local Moodle Partner. Please note that additional administration fees and a minimum of time of subscription will apply in this case as well.

If you are going to pay via bank transfer and want your invoice generated ASAP, you can contact us at mobile@moodle.com (we will need your site urls and your institution data for the invoice - legal name and address) and we will manually generate an invoice for you.

Sorry again for all the inconveniences, we wanted the process to be as smooth as possible but the current global circumstances are not helping.

I have registered our site moodle.ksz.ch on the Moodle App Portal. I was asked to validate our site, which I did. I did so using the email method first (fail) and then the HTML code in our site administration (fail). Then I get the message "The site already has a validated subscription with another organisation", yet it always says that validation is pending. This means I cannot upgrade to Premium, which is what our school urgently needs. I'm aware that we are given premium benefits until the end of April anyway, but that doesn't solve my problem with the registration. We host our own moodle instance, but we work with a Premium Partner (eLeDia in Berlin, Germany) for its maintenance. Can you help?

Hello Hansjoerg,

That error message means that there is already one subscription with the ownership validated for that site. We only allow one active subscription per site. There are multiple reasons for that, for example to avoid customers paying for two subscriptions at the same time without realizing.

Since you mentioned that you're working with a partner, that probably means they have an active subscription for your site. Partner sites have premium subscriptions that will continue working in May, so you shouldn't worry about that.

As per getting access to the subscription, we've been working on a feature to grant access to other organisations. Once that is available, you should be able to ask the partner for access. That way, you'll be able to manage your site without worrying about payment.

Thanks Noel, that helps - some, anyway. I'll get in touch with our partner and see what I can do there.

Hi,

as my colleague Noel mentioned, since your site is "actively managed hosted" by a partner, you won't have to pay for a subscription.

Your site automatically has a premium subscription enabled (I just verified it in our system), so no further action is required.

Probably, at the end of this week, your Moodle partner will be able to "invite" you to manage your site at apps.moodle.com (so you can see Push notification statistics, etc..)

Hi there,

payment via credit card, Paypal and bank transfer is now enabled in the Moodle Apps Portal (https://apps.moodle.com)

If you already have a site registered there, go to the "Change plan" option and choose a Pro/Premium plan

If you were not registered, you will be able to pay during the registration process

Please note that for payment via Bank transfer, a 2 years subscription of a Premium plan is required and there is an administration fee of 25eur

Regards, Juan

Hi Juan,

To confirm, payment via credit card and PayPal does not require a 2 years subscription of a Premium Plan? How about administration fee?

We're looking for details on the process of qualifying as a non-profit organisation. We're now only 2 weeks away from the stated deadline.

FWIW, the FAQ has a spelling error in that section: "NGOs and non-profit organisations can be ellegible for a Premium Plan for free." --> "eligible"

We are now at the deadline. Please tell us how to be recognized as a non-profit organization with Moodle. Where should we send a copy of our US 501(c)3 certificate?

Hi Tim,

have you registered your site on apps.moodle.com? If not, please register it.

We will enable a Premium plan for all the sites that requested the NGO free premium until we've finished with the qualification process.

Send us your site address (once is registered on apps.moodle.com) to mobile@moodle.com indicating that you are an NGO please

Hi Juan, I was asked to ask the following:-
"Withholding tax is payable to IRB Malaysia ~10% if an international company is doing business with Malaysian company. Can Moodle confirmed the organisation is doing business in Malaysia?"
Hope you can assist with the question.
Thank you.

Hi Juan,

Having browsed the list of Q & A in this post, I have not found my answer, so hopefully this is a not-yet-answered question (!):

If my organisation has a branded Moodle App, created and compiled from the open-source package, will we ever be able to benefit from the features of Premium Plan? I understand the Plan is linked to a site and not an app, so does it work if we link the Plan to the Moodle site which is pre-implemented in our App? This would be much appreciated to be able use Feature Disabling or custom .css styles.

Thanks in advance!
David

This was announced. If you are paying for the branded app, you automatically get the premium plan features.

Hi Tim,

thank you for your contribution!

However, my question: if we build an app from the open source course (so, not through a Moodle official partner) to have a customized Moodle app linked to our Moodle site, and if we suscribe the Premimum plan, do the Premium features such as Features Disabling or custom .css work ?

It would seem fair that such scheme work: after all, we would still contribute and support the Moodle community via the premium fees.

Hopefully this is the case!

Looking forward for answers!

David

Hi David,

unfortunately, this is not technically possible:
- The open source version does not include the "Apps portal" validation and restriction code
- For Push notifications, only apps built and signed with Moodle signing certificates can use the notification server (and we can't share those certificates obviously)

In your particular case, I'd evaluate the costs of doing the BMA internally or with us.

Hi Juan,
if I compile my own app using the open source version. Will my students be able to download unlimited courses from my self-hosted Moodle installation?

Hi,

yes, your students will be able to download unlimited courses, but please notice that:
* You will have to set-up your own Push Notifications infrastructure
* Some features like the QR code auto-login are not available in the open-source version
