A message from YMCA North CEO, Julian Baldey.

Kia ora <<First Name>>,

I hope that you and your whānau are keeping well and safe during what has been a long and challenging lockdown.

As you know, we are now moving towards our city opening up, and, for the YMCA, being able to re-open our doors and welcome our community back for the first time in 3 months.

Ensuring the health and safety of our workers and our customers and members is the most important thing we do. From the beginning, we have worked hard to minimise any transmission of COVID within our centres, and have been clear about this throughout our communication.

As you may be aware, organisations who wish to open throughout all levels of the COVID Protection Framework (more information on this is available on the Government COVID website) will be required to use vaccination certificates. This is something that we as YMCA North support. If we were to allow unvaccinated people onto our premises, we would not be able to open for quite some time.

Our organisation depends on people connecting in person. A large number of our customers are particularly vulnerable - either they are children who cannot yet be vaccinated, or they are particularly vulnerable to serious illness from COVID-19.

We have gone through an extensive exercise internally, assessing and understanding the risk that Delta brings to our centres, and internal consultation with our people to introduce a policy requiring all roles within YMCA North to be undertaken by vaccinated workers. This is something that has been overwhelmingly supported - our people believe in keeping themselves and others safe.

When we open under the COVID protection framework on 3 December 2021, we will be requiring proof of vaccination in order to enter our premises.

In relation to children over 12, the government is still releasing information on the specific details around this, so we will be in touch with greater detail when we know it.

We acknowledge that this may cause some distress to some of our customers, and we regret any upset this news may bring. However, we have to do what is necessary in order to protect those most vulnerable in our community - many of whom are part of the YMCA whānau.

Ngā mihi,
