It s life Jim...but not as we know it! (Star Trek). No one can believe what we are all faced with but one thing is certain - we will get through it and life will return. You will see that this magazine has no date. Things are so unclear as we go to print that we cannot be sure when the magazine will get out to you all. Our magazines are all online at www.villagematters.co.uk and we will get the digital versions out on social media. Please think about the small businesses who make up the majority of our advertisers. We need to support trades, as well as restaurants which are now offering delivery service etc. Without your support and custom small businesses will go under. We want to

thank our advertisers who continue to support us in these mags. We hope that our treasured lives will return to some sort of normality within a short space of time. But we are living in a very uncertain world. Please think of each other. Be kind and caring and try to stay positive.

The Anchor Garage, Shepperton By Nick Pollard

Local residents will be familiar with this pagoda-style building which is now a car showroom on the corner of Chertsey Road, opposite Church Square. However, as can be seen from this photograph dating from the early 1930s, this was adapted by glazing in the original structure, which was one of the earliest petrol station canopies in the area. This was founded as part of the Anchor Hotel business, and as indicated by the sign which can be glimpsed through the pillars, there was an extensive car park to one side, which would no doubt be very welcome to the hotel these days. A weather vane adorns the roof, and perhaps even more surprisingly, there is a little garden complete with pond and fountain in the raised bed in front of the building. According to news reports when it opened, there were even goldfish in the pond! A range of petrol pumps stand under the canopy, and it was a feature of garages at the time that a variety of different fuels would be stocked, each with its own pump. Single brand stations as we have today were unknown at the time. Nearest to the camera is one dispensing National Benzole, which was a 5050 mix of benzole, a coal tar derivative, and petrol. The next in line delivers Pratt s Ethyl, a mix of petrol and ethylene, which was sold until 1935 when the brand name changed to Esso, dating the photograph. Of course a uniformed attendant was on hand to serve the motorist with fuel – a far cry from today s large self service facilities. With the current Corvid-19 virus outbreak, it is unlikely that the next scheduled Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society talk, To the Glory of God: Littleton Church 1890s-1940s by Will Hardy, at 8pm on Tuesday 21st April at Halliford School, will take place, but please check the Society s website www.sslhs.org.uk for updates.

Family values at the heart of what we do

Helping Support the Lonely As Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreads across the UK, it will be harder for people to maintain their social connections. For many people there will be a tough, but necessary period of social isolation. Many of us will miss seeing family and friends and taking part in our usual hobbies, interests and activities. It shows how important friendship and connection are in our lives, and how difficult it can be when they re missing. This reminds us that for too many people their lives are often quite a lot like this. Research shows that half a million older people regularly experience these kinds of protracted periods of isolation, going at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. During the Coronavirus outbreak it s especially important we can stay in touch with people who are alone. Making sure that you stay in touch with friends, family and neighbours can help to ease any feelings of loneliness you and others may experience while in isolation. Technology can help with this enormously. Call your friends, colleagues and relatives regularly on the phone and see how they are. Create WhatsApp groups with neighbours, family or friends. Share how you re getting on and ask other people how they are. Use Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date and keep in touch. Offer to help with shopping or running errands. You could use an app like Nextdoor to see if your neighbours need assistance. If you re worried about transmitting the virus you can leave the bags on the doorstep. For many, the telephone will be the easiest and most accessible way to keep in contact. Some of this technology might be new or difficult to use for some older friends and family. Offer help and support to install and use apps. When using social media be mindful that this To advertise call Monica on 07979 808991

may be a frightening and isolating time for many. Be kind. Offer help and advice where you can. Try not to spread unfounded rumours that may cause upset or panic. Technology can t replace the feeling of communicating in person, but there are ways of staying connected in isolation that can help. For many of us this will be a difficult time. Isolation measures are to protect as many people from the worst effects of coronavirus and this will be temporary. If we make the effort to stay connected, we can make a big difference to people who are feeling alone at this time. Source : Campaign to End Loneliness

So Much More to Aesthetics Advertorial

The recently established Facial & Body Sculpting by Monika in Sunbury-on-Thames brings an exciting innovation to the area, attracting clients from Teddington, Walton, Staines and Twickenham as well as Sunbury. Monika launched the business in November 2019 and the home-based clinic has quickly become popular. It offers privacy and flexibility, with appointments available to suit the client - early mornings, late evenings, and even at the weekend. You choose what time works for you. The equipment used in the clinic features the latest cutting edge technology - as championed by Lord Alan Sugar. Dr Leah Totton 2013 winner of BBC One's "The Apprentice" - founded the Born and Bred medical device company here in the UK. The clinic offers a wide range of treatments for both face and body. Facial treatments include Non-Surgical Facelift, Jaw Lift, and Double Chin Reduction. On the body the following are offered: Fat Freezing, Fat Melting, Cavitation, Mummy Tummy Contouring and Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Reduction). Many other treatments are also available. All services are overseen by Monika, who has over 20 years experience in the medical and pharmaceutical industry. Treatments are carried out in a safe and regulated manner, and staff are fully trained, registered and insured. It is worth noting that many of the treatments offered are only available in handful of clinics across the entire Greater London area. Whereas a beauty salon offers treatments such as relaxing facials, waxing and tinting etc, a clinic offers services that go more than just skin deep. The services offered can literally turn back time. The clinic is bright, hygienic and medical, located in a discreet area tucked away from the busy high street. You can enjoy a true Harley Street experience, conveniently located closer to home, at the time that suits you and at a price you can afford! listen to your concerns, and then work with you to offer the best solution with competitive and personalised price, tailored achieve the desired results. The optimum results come from having a course of treatments and then maintaining it on a regular basis. However, even the first treatment will spark comments such as: You look fresh! or even "Something's changed!" The popular Fat Freezing and Fat Melting treatments have impressive results. The photos below show the difference after just 4 treatments. If you have a special event that you need to slim down for and look refreshed, then this is the ideal treatment for you!

Defending Green Belt It was good to hear that Spelthorne Borough Council has announced a special defence fund of ÂŁ900,000 to enable it to challenge applications from developers wanting to build in the Green Belt. The notification states The Council has always been fiercely protective of the Borough s Green Belt and is known for taking a stance against aggressive developers looking to build on green spaces. As the planning process currently stands, whilst Spelthorne rules on Planning applications and can refuse those which affect the Green Belt, developers can appeal to the Planning Inspector. Fighting these appeals is not only lengthy, they can also be very expensive. Leader of the Council, for the past four years, Cllr Ian Harvey said; Pressing demands on our local authority budgets could lead to the question, where should parks and green spaces stand in the pecking order of priorities for this authority? We recognise how much green spaces contribute to the health and wellbeing of our community and the Council is determined to do everything it can to preserve parks and highly performing green belt areas open for future generations. Whilst we can t stop developers from submitting applications, this fund will enable us to obtain the necessary advice and expertise to fight our case and give us the best chance of protecting our Green Belt for the future generations . But the fact remains that our green belt is under threat in the form of the Local Plan so how does that square with this fighting fund? It is all in the labelling; Highly Performing . Stratton Road, Charlton Village fields, Old Charlton Road greenbelt. This is not considered highly performing. As for the people s petition against building on green belt which garnered nearly 5500 signatories...it seems to have had no effect as a vote in council was carried by one vote to go ahead with the green belt development as laid out in the Local Plan. We do recognise it was not an easy decision. The fear is that without an agreement within Spelthorne, the council may have decisions taken away from them and a plan imposed.

Eco Park Article - Suez Responds Dear Editor, We were concerned to read the article titled Is the Eco Park a White Elephant in the January 2020 edition of Shepperton Matters and Sunbury Matters, as the article included several pieces of information which were outdated or incorrect. We are pleased to confirm that the Eco Park has in fact generated electricity and as of January 2020 had produced over 2.5GWh, which is enough to power 700 homes for an entire year. The anaerobic digestion facility had also processed over 11,000 tonnes of food waste – well over the 4,000 tonnes reported in the article. In fact, the facility processed all of Surrey s food waste over Christmas and into the New Year, coping well with the 150% increase in volume associated with the holiday season. The article goes on to claim that the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) processed at the Eco Park has low energy content which will not be enough to sustain the gasifier and generate electricity. However, the waste processed at the Eco Park has a higher calorific value than what the pre-treatment process was modelled on, resulting in RDF that is well within the energy content range that the Eco Park s gasification process was designed to operate with. Because the RDF is high quality, gasoil is only necessary upon start up and shut down, as waste cannot be introduced into the process until the top of the chamber reaches 850 degrees. The nature of commissioning requires the plant to start up and shut down more frequently than during normal operations, but it is not used like paraffin on a bonfire, except continuously as the article asserts. Regarding the article s comments on financial matters, we would like to remind readers that Surrey County Council s Cabinet agreed to proceed with the construction of the Eco Park following a comprehensive value for money assessment. The value for money case remains unchanged despite the delays to the Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

construction and Defra continues to support the project with the Waste Infrastructure Grant. SUEZ and Surrey County Council are working in partnership to deliver an integrated waste management system which increases recycling across the county, encourages reuse through the five Revive shops, and moves non-recyclable waste away from landfill. We look forward to reusing and recycling even more and making the most of Surrey s household waste in 2020. Sincerely, Tim Evans, Surrey County Councillor for Lower Sunbury and Halliford Richard Walsh, Surrey County Councillor for Laleham and Shepperton Justin Hampton, Eco Park Plant Manager, SUEZ recycling and recovery UK

Creative Quilting Inspires

On the assumption that we will be allowed out to play, do take a look at our new class list which covers the next few months and is full of patchwork inspiration. We have some 3 hour classes – day and eve – and then some full day (6 hour); some are project driven and others are more social with everyone working on their own ideas (called open format) Our fabric ranges include Moda, Liberty, Tilda, Brighton from Stof, and of course lots from our UK designer Makower all designed for the patchwork industry – but since they are 100% cotton,we don t mind if you use them in other things – such as dresses or skirts and blouses. Our new Beginners Sew a Row sampler, which you can sign up for on a monthly basis. has a very modern look and is made with simple patchwork shapes. We have some delightful embroidery kits for beginners as well as accomplished sewers and by the time you read this our plans to expand into knitting and crochet should mean that we have supplies for you. And You can pop into the shop for Crochet Mondays; Turn up Tuesday s for free demos at 2pm to learn patchwork techniques and using specialist rulers and tools; Knit and Natter Thursday s; and then there are some English Paper piecing classes and a Jelly Roll Saturday. And it s not all about quilts – how about making this rug from scraps if you have them, or a jelly roll which we can help with! The shop has a team of dedicated (or should we say addicted) quilters – who are always there to help you.

Looking into windows When selling your home there are certain certificates that are required to show that your home is compliant with regulations. One of these is a FENSA certificate for replacement windows and doors that were installed after April 2002. What is FENSA? It is an acronym for Fenestration SelfAssessment Scheme. It is a regulatory scheme set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation, with approval from Government bodies to ensure that installations by double-glazing companies conform to Building Regulation and industry standards. Registered and approved companies can then self-certify their work under the Local Authority’s Building Control department’s Competent Persons Scheme and provide the homeowner with a FENSA certificate, accompanied by a guarantee.

When you sell with Curchods, we will advertise your home on all the major property websites:

FENSA require all registered doubleglazing companies to provide insurance for their work. This includes the quality of the installation, as well as certain aspects of the performance. In addition, FENSA’s Indemnity Scheme protects your initial deposit. Do I need a FENSA certificate? If you replace windows and doors they need to comply with Building Regulations for thermal performance, even if you are upgrading the existing. If you are installing windows as part of a new extension they will be covered by the extension’s Building Regulation Completion certificate. Should you replace existing windows and doors in other parts of the property at the same time, unless they are specified on the extensions consent, then you will need to obtain separate approval.

Alternatively, you can get an accredited FENSA installer to carry out the work and they will automatically be certified.

Conservatories, garden rooms, garage doors and outbuildings do not require a FENSA certificate.

Are there any exceptions?

For professional advice on all aspects of selling or letting your home, contact Owen Miles, Partner and his friendly, experienced team at Curchods Shepperton.

If you are replacing a door and the new one has less than 50% glass of its surface area then a FENSA certificate is not required. Also, windows and doors on a porch do not require a certificate, as long as there is an external grade front door between the porch and the main house.

Recipe of the Month Bubble and Squeak

The Community Café @Riverhousebarn in Walton on Thames continues with recipes showing how you can use leftovers. They create wonderful food from surplus, donated by a local supermarket. Go and try their surplus lunch for £5 and they will donate the proceeds to local charities feeding those on low incomes and who are struggling.

This is hardly a recipe, but a reminder of what you can do with leftovers. Basic bubble and squeak is mashed potato and cooked cabbage, but you can make it with any surplus vegetables and top the little patties with anything you like to turn it into a more substantial meal. Come and visit the café at the weekend and see how Jessamie serves it on Squeak up Sunday! 400g cold mashed potato 2 spring onions sliced Half a cooked cabbage/or 200g brussels sprouts/any left over cooked vegetables 40g melted butter Mix the mashed potato with the cooked vegetables, spring onions and melted butter and generously season with salt and pepper - then shape into patties (roughly the size of your fist) and fry in a pan with a knob of butter until you can actually hear the potato squeaking . You want a nice brown crispy outside with a hot fluffy inside. This should take 3 minutes on each side. Then top with anything you fancy - smoked salmon, ham, poached egg, roasted tomatoes or creamed mushrooms all make great brunch dishes Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

Breaking Up or Healing Up? By Denise Bosque

from a sincere desire to understand the other person and listen from the heart. I always teach couples NVC (Non-Violent Communication), a technique originating from Buddhist philosophy, increasingly popular, including, within the United Nations.

The source of most relationship issues is poor communication. Common reasons why communication breaks down: Blame, or dominating attitudes Disengaging or withdrawing Resentful compliance Denial or confusion If you married someone hoping they would 'change', you were on a hiding to nowhere. People generally don't change, but they can develop. A good start is using effective communication skills, including respect, openness and persistence. Very few people know how to listen. We are so eager to get our tuppence worth in that we don't actively listen. Instead, we're just ready to pounce on why we are right, and the other is wrong. Does the word 'childish' ring a bell here? We need to learn how to: Communicate without whining, blaming or being vague Manage emotions, such as intense anger Understand your partner's main concerns When the same problems keep arising, rather than asking "What should I do about this problem?" A better question could be "How do I aspire to be in this situation?" The first step to heal a relationship comes Please mention Shepperton Matters when responding to adverts

Here is a condensed version; however, before launching into it, explain that you'd like to use this technique to become a better communicator. Ask your partner when would be a good time to bring up something bothering you, agree a day and time. Bring up only one topic. Agree on no interruptions from the other, as they will get their chance to speak. The basic format is Topic + Your feeling about it + Your request. You then let your partner respond (remember no interruptions and NO BLAME) Example: "You know when you leave your dirty dishes in front of the TV" (topic), It makes me feel angry and disrespected" (taking responsibility for your feelings) "I wonder if you'd mind clearing them away each time" (request) Your partner might respond: "I didn't realise it was such a big thing, I think it's trivial, but I can see why it might upset you, so yes I will clear my dishes up". Or in some cases, there might be a compromise. Note: To become competent start with simple topics. Be patient while each of you develops new habits. Cut each other some slack; you will both forget from time to time. Praise, sincerely, when they do remember. For more tips for couples visit https:// denisebosque.com/couple

Surrey charity Brigitte Trust Bags £25,000 Tesco Centenary Grant Tesco shoppers throughout Surrey have been voting with their blue tokens during the latest Tesco Bags of Help promotion which saw grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 awarded to community projects. The Brigitte Trust has been awarded first prize. The Trust covers the whole of Surrey with a free service of home visits from trained volunteers offering emotional and practical support when a life-limiting illness is diagnosed. We are overwhelmed to have received such a financial boost through Tesco s Centenary Celebration said Lucy Beach, Charity Manager at the Trust. Volunteers are the true heroes of our charity, building relationships, sharing special time together and helping people and their carers live the best life possible through their illness. This funding means we can recruit and train more volunteers to support people and their families facing the effects of cancer and other serious illness across Surrey. Enormous thanks to everyone who voted for us and made this happen. Volunteer training courses take place in June and September. Details can be found on www.brigittetrust.com/ volunteering The presentation took place at Denbies Wine Estate. Pictured L to R above: Vanessa Smith Charity Promotions Manager, Jan Way, Trustee, Peter Crossley Chair of Trustees and Lucy Beach Charity Manager with Clover the charity s PAT dog and a small helper.

VOLUNTEER SHEPPERTON Sadly, many of us have been touched by cancer, MND or other lifethreatening illness - perhaps a family member, friend or work colleague and the news can be devastating. Brigitte Trust volunteers visit weekly, offering a free service of emotional and practical support and the chance to share some of the feelings and concerns serious illness brings. After training volunteers, who should be car drivers, are asked to commit four hours each week to local visits. Come to our next volunteer taster session. Keep Smiling - by Natasha Craig Surrey mother Lynn Craig contacted Shepperton Matters recently to share the story of her daughter Natasha. It is a story no mother wants to tell. Natasha Craig died July 2007 of anorexia nervosa, a crippling eating disorder illness affecting far too many, both men and women, and increasing in the very young. Natasha wrote and completed a book two years before she died but it was never published. Lynn was eventually persuaded to do so on Natasha s behalf and she has finally succeeded, 13 years after Natasha s death. The book Keep Smiling is now available on Amazon and is also on Kindle and in paperback. Natasha Craig started counting calories as a young schoolgirl and ended up with a dangerous eating disorder. She kept regular diaries and wrote this book throughout her treatment. The introduction is written by leading eating disorders expert, Professor Janet Treasure, Psychiatrist & Director of The Eating Disorders Service. Natasha s greatest wish was to have her voice heard and to spread awareness says Lynn. The book has already attracted a lot of interest from organisations dealing with anorexia and mental health. Lynn is also reaching out to health centres, schools and universities. There were 19,040 admissions for eating disorders in 2018/19, up from 16,558 the year before and 13,885 in 2016/17. The NHS Digital data for England found the most common age last year for patients with anorexia was 13 to 15. . (data from PA news agency January 2020) Maybe Natasha can save someone else the pain and heartache this disease can cause

Village Matters Supporting Local Small Businesses I have always thought that human kindness is bursting at the seams, just waiting for a chance to emerge. Could it be that the collapse of normality that arises during and after calamity, awakens something deep within us? Perhaps these moments open a space, however briefly, for new forms of civic engagement and public life. Over the last few weeks, tens of thousands of people all over the country have joined community efforts to look after the most vulnerable in society by volunteering to pick up shopping, deliver medicine and even offer music lessons to defeat boredom. Right now, our community is more important than ever, because working together we can provide support to the individuals and local businesses who are impacted by the daily stress, struggles and chaos that the Coronavirus (COVID - 19) pandemic is bringing. At the time of writing, it does seem that this pulling together will have to last for some considerable months. It is now that we must really all look to each and support our community. We must support our small and local businesses. These businesses are the backbone of our community. With all the uncertainty that is upon us, it is vitally important that those businesses make their voices heard and have a platform to do so. It might just be to say, I am still here. Don t forget us . Business awareness will be critical in the coming months. This magazine and its sister publications were always built and designed on the premise of a strong community and championing small business. So we want to put something back into the community. For the months of May, June and July (covering a 3-month agreement) we will work with small businesses who want to advertise on our platforms, whether print or digital. Please contact us to discuss and let us help each other: Monica 07979 808991 and Paul 07946 494288.

Gardening Matters Container Fruit

By Rachael Leverton

April is the perfect month for planting container-grown fruit trees and bushes. Even if your garden space is limited you can still grow fruit trees and bushes. You can even grow them in containers on a balcony. The trick is to read the label. Look for dwarf varieties that won t grow too large for your pot or garden. It s a good idea to buy selffertile plants too, especially if you don t live in an area where lots of people grow their own fruit. Even on a small plot buy the biggest pot you can fit into the available space. Bigger pots hold more compost, so they contain more food, more water and more space for strong root growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and cover the base with drainage material. Handy hint – if wind is a problem on your site use heavy material like broken crockery or stones to add weight, whereas if you will need to be able to move the pot easily use polystyrene chunks, which are very lightweight. Fill the container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree or shrub from its original pot, spread the roots a little and plant it in the new container to the same depth. Water the compost well initially and then whenever the surface is dry. If you want to plant your fruit tree in the garden dig a hole as deep as the root system, and about three times the width. Place the plant into the hole and refill it. Then firming the soil with your foot. If the tree is in an exposed area you might need to stake it. Fruit is very easy to grow, and there are a huge variety of fruit trees or bushes to suit every garden size and aspect, so you re bound to find the perfect plant for your space. Try: Dwarf apple trees, which provide interest all

year round as well as fruit in the autumn. Any of the currants. Blackcurrants are particularly nice. They are low maintenance and great in jams and pies. They like a sunny spot and plenty of water Raspberries are lovely. They fruit in summer and like a sheltered sunny spot. You buy raspberry canes rather than bushes. Look for a thorn-free variety. Blueberries grow really well and are great for growing in a container because they like acid soil and in a container, this is easy to provide. Look for ericaceous compost which you should keep moist because like most soft fruits they are quite thirsty plants. Collect rainwater for the purpose as blueberries are not keen on tap water. I lgrow strawberries in large hanging baskets to make the most of the space. They are easy to grow this way but make sure you keep them well fed with a high potash fertiliser as nutrients leach away from hanging baskets very easily. I protect all my container-grown soft fruit with netting my garden birds tend to view my patio display as a rolling all-season buffet laid on especially for their benefit. Happy gardening.
