Can I use intel i210/i211/i340/i350 to test my IEEE1588 ptp based system? Does it have PPS output?

Hi,

I have IEEE1588 PTP based system. I want to test it using intel NIC card(i210/i211/i340/i350) by configuring this card as master and my system as slave.

My question are:

  1. Does ieee1588 PTP is supported in i210, i211, i340 and i350 NIC cards?
  2. Does this card has PPS output, if yes how can I find it?
  3. Does this NIC card support linux PTP Application?

Waiting for your response.

Hello AChav23,

Thank you for the patience on this matter.

Please refer to below details for our response to your query.

1. Does ieee1588 PTP is supported in i210, i211, i340 and i350 NIC cards?

Based on the Product Brief and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) of the i210, i211, i340 and i350 NIC cards, IEEE1588 is supported. Please visit below links for reference.

Does the Intel device driver support the 1588 protocol standard?

Though the I350 supports the 1588 protocol standard, the device driver does not. Each application is unique and requires customers to develop their own custom driver to support this feature.

2. Does this card has PPS output, if yes how can I find it?

In case you are looking for the PPS pins on I210-T1, there is no PPS pin on the physical board. We have looked at the schematic for I210 and it shows the 4 SDP pins (Software Defined Pins). The other pins are likely LED.

We can provide the reference schematic if necessary. But this will require Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) or to register with Resource & Design Center (RDC).

3. Does this NIC card support linux PTP Application?

Do Intel software device drivers support PTP?

Currently, Windows operating systems provide no support for IEEE 1588, and support in Linux is only emerging. Because of this, the only software device drivers that support IEEE1588 are the Linux drivers for the 82576, 82580, and I350 controllers. These software device drivers provide an interface for the operating system and PTP applications to the time stamping functions in the Ethernet controller, but do not currently provide an interface to tune the internal clock. Driver support for other devices is coming soon. Although software device driver support does not exist for all devices and all operating systems, PTP applications in any operating system can still use the Intel hardware time stamping functionality in any device by interacting directly with the Ethernet controller. PTP applications for Intel-based NICs exist for both Windows and Linux.

Thank You for your response.

The PPS output is not available in i210. So I am planning to generate 1Hz clock on SDP(this is possible as per the information I got from i210 datasheet 7.8.3.3.3 Synchronized Output Clock on SDP Pins).

My question is

  1. Does intel i210 NIC card board has SDP pins accessible(through some kind port). It will be better if I can get pinout of the board or some board datasheet.
  2. Where I can buy this i210-T1 NIC card.

Hello,

May I receive NDA and information regarding i210 and i350?

I have multiple PTP devices and I wish to use the i210&/i350 as an end station and generate a pps off the cards. I wish to do this on both windows and linux (debian && ubuntu).

Best
