Hospitals - India

Hi All,

The India Hospitals Data-sets which is taken from the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), New Delhi and Published in Open data Govt https://data.gov.in/resources/national-hospital-directory-geo-code-and-additional-parameters-updated-till-last-month has the valuable Hospital and other healthcare facilities information which can add value to OSM-India for good Hospital Coverage which provide the additional information to the people in their area for any Hospital Information, Health facilities Information etc… which can be useful for the Humanitarian team in India in any disasters- like email, Phone, address, Website, Specialty etc…

For the data quality and Position accuracy visit https://github.com/osm-in/mapping/issues/2
I’m currently cleaning the data State/city wise which including removal of duplication , Making the data compatible to OSM Tagging, Removing the additional attributes which are not compatible to OSM etc…

Initially I have tested by the adding the known hospital information from Government data-sets in the Hyderabad City (Local City).
https://maproulette.org/browse/challenges/8000
I Strongly feel that the attribute information which have been added to the OSM is more enhancing the existing Hospital data.

Here are the Maproulette challenges for Bihar and Bangalore if any one having the local knowledge on Bihar/Bangalore can take the challenge & provide your feedback, suggestions on the data.

If any Local users want to develop the Hospital Information of their city/State i can help you to create the Maproulette challenge

TAGGING

Here are the Tagging schema which I have followed

**1. These tags indicates the general tags
**

**2. These tags represents the main facility or function of the healthcare:
**

**3. Tagging for the Facility and Specialty of the healthcare:
**

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:healthcare#Specialities_for_healthcare.3Dclinic

4. Records Excluded from the Data-set:

I’ve just been looking at Karimnagar AP, and found to my surprise that there were a large number of ‘hospitals’ tagged in a small area around the district hospital, maybe within a 1 sq. km. urban area. This is a large number but a lot seem to be actually ‘nursing homes’.

See https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/18.44102/79.13062

There has been no discussion following the original post above. The first post states or implies in the table that the government dataset uses ‘nursing home’ to mean something other than what it means in OSM, and that in the absence of any clarification it corresponds better to hospital. I don’t believe that just tagging them ‘hospital’, because no one has responded here with a limited community, is effective. At the least the source information should have been included so that we could see that the original government classification was ‘nursing home’. At present the only indication is in most cases the amenity’s name. I think this will create a problem in the future. There should be some discussion of the best tagging in these cases. The original value could be included by creating tags to transfer the source data, as has been done elsewhere.

Hi Indigomc,

Thanks for writing us.
Hope that you are doing great!

I understand many of the Nursing homes are tagged as the “Hospitals” because as per the global convention nursing home refers to the a home for elderly person for a permanent care but In case of India, this is mostly used as a place where people can get health related facilities for both outpatient and inpatients”.
Refer https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/India/Tags/Proposed

Please suggest if you have any best tag for tagging the Nursing Homes in India.
As per my suggestion amenity=clinic will suit more for the facilities provided in the Nursing homes.

Regards
Neena

I think the only immediate solution that I see is to add the data to the map with a special tag. There is nothing stopping this. Perhaps one that makes it clear where the information originates, e.g.-

NIHFW:designation=nursing_home

and similarly for the other data of value that might one day be useful in OSM. The tag(s) should have a page created for them on the OSM wiki where the source of the information and how it was originally used is made clear.
