New Zealand's Greenhouse Gas Inventory (the inventory) is the official annual report of human-generated greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand. This tool shows the data from the latest inventory report.
Energy – (eg, road transport and electricity production)
Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) – (eg, metals, minerals and chemicals)
Agriculture – (eg, nitrous oxide from fertiliser, methane from livestock digestive systems and
manure)
Waste – (eg, solid waste and wastewater)
Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) – (eg, forest land, cropland, grassland, wetlands,
settlements, other land).
Tokelau – (eg, Energy, IPPU, Agriculture and Waste for Tokelau, New Zealand's overseas dependent
territory).
Gross emissions comprise greenhouse gas emissions from all sectors excluding LULUCF.
Net emissions comprise greenhouse gas emissions and removals from all sectors including
LULUCF.
Net emissions are lower than gross emissions because the LULUCF sector currently removes more
greenhouse gas from the atmosphere than it emits.
New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory (1990-2022) and interactive emissions tracker applies the 100-year global warming potential (GWP100) values from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5).
Emissions from Tokelau were included in New Zealand's gross emissions for the first time in 2019. They are reported as the 'Tokelau' sector, separately from the other sectors.
Note: Emissions or removals of less than 0.005 kt CO₂-e may not always be displayed in the tables as they are rounded to 2 decimal places.
Please note this information contains only historical greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 to the latest reported year. The latest reported year is approximately 15 months behind the inventory publication to give time for countries to collect data.
