To explore how to accelerate sustainable and low-carbon urban development, the fourth webinar of the Climate Conscious Cities: Urban-Act Webinar Series dives into the concept of climate-sensitive urban planning.
Rapid, unplanned urbanization across the Asia-Pacific continues to present multiple interlinked and multiscale challenges. The region’s urbanization is often carbon intensive and unplanned, guided by weak or ineffectual regulatory and planning frameworks to guide sustainable urbanization. Coupled with the impacts of climate change, disordered and unregulated urban planning and development can have disastrous consequences, leaving cities with not just devastating environmental impacts, but lasting social and economic impacts. Cities need the right know how, resourcing, and investment to implement climate-sensitive urban planning and build urban resilience. How can they do this?
Speakers:
- Jörn Birkmann - Director, Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning (IREUS), University of Stuttgart
- Andhika Ajie - CEO, The Center for Research and Innovation, Regional Development Planning Agency, Jakarta City Government
- Ashita Sharma - Cities and Climate Change Technical Advisor, United Nations ESCAP
Throughout 2024, the monthly Climate Conscious Cities: Urban-Act Webinar Series will provide the opportunity for practitioners and policymakers to meaningfully exchange in dialogue and impactful ideas, and increase practical knowledge of low-carbon and climate-sensitive urban development.
