NZ Super Fund chief executive Matt Whineray has resigned after 15 years with the organisation.
Whineray has been the chief executive of the $60 billion NZ Super Fund since 2018, and will leave at the end of the year, before Christmas.
He said he felt privileged to have worked with the fund, which was this week named the world's best performing sovereign investor over the past 10 years with an annualised return of 12.1 percent.
"I am proud of our team's stewardship of the NZ Super Fund, which has seen global recognition for the fund's strong investment performance, our work in responsible investing, and reporting and transparency," he said.
"This success is the result of the combined efforts of all members of the Guardians' team and the board over many years."
Whineray said he was confident the team was well placed to meet the new challenges and opportunities that would arise, with the Super Fund expected to double in size to more than $120b in the next decade.
Guardians chair Catherine Drayton praised Whineray for his efforts as chief executive, and previously as chief investment officer of the fund, saying he would be sorely missed.
"His legacy will be his commitment to high performance, his commitment to our people and his commitment to sustainable investment."
