Yes, it's really free
Unless explicitly noted, all the events, exhibitions, photowalks, lectures, slideshows, and openings at StreetFoto are free, and do not require registration. (We do charge for workshops and portfolio reviews.) We are able to put on this event due to the generosity of our sponsors, and all of those who enter the International Street Photography Awards. Your entry fees make this event possible.
This is a lot of stuff. What should I do?
It’s up to you! Do you need to be here all week? No. There are things to do every day, and you can see most of all of our exhibits in one day if you hustle. Our biggest events are on the nights of June 9th and 10th, so if you’re traveling in from afar, try to be here then.
Feel free to pop in and visit one event or try to make it to as many as you can.
If you like to look at printed work, we have lots of exhibitions this year. Make sure you make it to the finalists exhibition at Harvey Milk Photo Center.
If you want to see films and lectures, we’ve got plenty of those also.
Want to walk around with other photographers? Check out our free photowalks (which are filling up quickly).
If you’re serious about improving your own street photography, consider one of our workshops.

Workshops
Since our founding in 2016, people have traveled in from around the globe to teach and learn street photography at StreetFoto San Francisco. Take a look at our workshops for 2020. Joining one (or two!) will be the highlight of your festival experience.
Photowalks
REGISTRATION WILL OPEN IN MAY
This may be what we do best. Every year we host free photowalks every day of the festival in different neighborhoods throughout the city, and we get fantastic feedback about them. In the past, they’ve all filled up, so this year we’ll be offering more than ever.
Advice for visitors
HOW TO GET AROUND:
Walk
San Francisco is small, and big parts of it are not all that hilly. Walking is the best way to see and photograph a place, and we hope to see a lot of you on the streets in June.
Transit
The City has decent public transportation. The best way to figure it out is by asking Google Maps for directions to a place by transit. You’ll generally be within a couple of blocks of a bus or streetcar stop. In fact, there is a trolly stop right outside Harvey Milk Photo Center, our main venue, and this line will carry you to any of our other exhibition venues.
Cable cars are for tourists only.
Uber / Lyft
If you are in a hurry, these apps will have a car at the curb within minutes, and are very reasonably priced. For an even cheaper ride, try Uber Pool or Lyft Line, which let the driver pick up and drop off other passengers on the way to your destination. You can even use these apps to get a ride from the airport into town.
Taxis
Compared to most places, this city has quite a few taxis. While they are a bit more expensive than Uber and Lyft, you can count on experienced and reliable drivers. Taxis also get to use special lanes that allow then to get around more quickly.
Driving
We don’t recommend it. Parking and traffic can make this a difficult option. It’s not impossible, but if you do drive, we recommend parking for the day and getting around other ways.
HOTELS
Many of you will be traveling in from afar. We recommend that you book a place to stay as soon as possible, as San Francisco can get very crowded in the summer.
We recommend Metro Hotel, a comfortable, reasonably priced boutique hotel very close to the festival. If you can’t find a room available for all the nights you need, give them a call and they may be able to let you switch rooms midway through your visit.
Airbnb is a popular option in San Francisco. There are also several reasonably-priced hostels for those on a budget.
If you find something outside the city, you will be able to take BART, our regional subway, to come into San Francisco.

Pier 24
This private photography museum is amazing. To visit, reservations are required. Book your spot and visit this beautiful shrine to our art.
De Young Museum
San Francisco’s largest fine arts museum always has a good photography exhibit.
SFMOMA
The City’s museum of modern art is home to the largest space for photographic exhibition in the United States.
This place needs no introduction. It’s not just a place to buy cameras, it is a fantastic photography gallery with rotating exhibits, a veritable museum of cameras, and the best place in San Francisco to buy photo books.

We’ll be showing you all over town on our free photowalks, but if you’re itching to go it alone (as a lot of us are), find lots of people on the streets in these areas:
- Market Street from Civic Center to the Embarcadero

- Chinatown
- Haight Street near Golden Gate Park on 6/9 (for the Haight Street Fair)
