From New York Times Bestselling Author, Kristen Proby, comes an all new paranormal romance set in the mystical city of New Orleans…

I am never alone. Not even when I am alone.
I see the unquiet dead, the souls that wander through the French Quarter.
They can’t move on, and I can’t stop seeing them.
I wear malachite for protection, and I control what I let in. It’s the only way to stay sane. Everything changes the day Cassian Winslow joins my ghost walking tour and knocks my world off its axis with green eyes the color of the stone around my neck.
An unspeakable evil is loose in New Orleans, taking young women and leaving a bloodbath in his wake. More shadows lurking for me. More unhappy dead. There might be a way to stop it.
Open myself up to Cassian.
If I do, it could spell his death.
But if I don’t, it’s mine.

I have heard that New Orleans was the most haunted place in the country, and after reading this story, I have no doubts. Shadows is a paranormal romance and something new and different from Kristen Proby.

Shadows revolves around Brielle, one of three gifted sisters. Brielle can see dead people, or “shadows”. When something changes with the shadows, there is trouble. Fortunately, a hot FBI profiler, Cash, is there to help Brielle and her sisters.

I absolutely adored Brielle and Cash together. There was no OW/OM drama, just a sweet love story. Yes, it was very insta-love, but it worked. From the very beginning, Cash was very protective of Brielle and there was also a weird feeling that they knew each other, even though they have never met.

Honestly, this story is more creepy than scary. There is a murder mystery going on, and let me tell you, the killer is a whack job. You do get to read the killer’s POV too, which also helped with the “creep o factor”.

I am anxiously awaiting book 2, which I think may revolve around the middle sister Millie. I have some unanswered questions that I hope will be explained in the next book.

Favorite Quotes:

“It’s a hell of a first date,” Millie mumbles. “I mean, most people just get naked and have sex and then regret their life choices in the morning. This is on a whole different level.” I smirk and then shrug. “The night’s not over yet.”

“For you,” she says to Cash, passing him a coffee. “There’s a protection spell in there.” “Does it have eye of newt?” he asks, flashing a smile. “Not this time,” Millie replies with a wink, making Cash’s smile slide from his face.

My Review:

I’m not much of a paranormal reader but I’ve recently discovered this smooth and talented wordsmith named Kristen Proby and thought I’d give it a perusal. Somewhere on page one, her cunning word voodoo sucked me right into her character’s vortex while her strong and crafty juju held me enthralled. I was spellbound by her well-crafted and shrewdly plotted tale.

The engaging storylines and writing were absorbing and swirling with atmosphere and cast with oddly intriguing characters. I couldn’t put my Kindle down despite the chilling and gruesome nature of the crimes depicted. It was spine-tingling. I am definitely hooked and while I may not be much of a paranormal reader, I certainly seem to be one when Kristen Proby throws it down.

So this was my first Kristen Proby.. And don't kill me but I wasn't bowled over by it..

description

Typically any book that is set in New Orleans I see, I pick up. I think I watched The Big Easy way too young and it imprinted on me.

description

Anywho, I liked the characters and setting but I constantly felt that it's a spin-off of other works. The writing felt almost simplistic with the explanations coming in too late after I assumed what they were and pushing the suspension of disbelief to the max. For example the relationship between Brielle and Cash was sweet but I really couldn't understand how he never doubted her and believed her straight away about all the supernatural things she could see. They both feel the attraction immediately and jump in to an ultra serious relationship within a day. I know it's all magic and supernatural and past lives, soulmates and all but it still happened too fast for me. I also had the impression the author watched many crime/serial killer documentaries. Not that it's a bad thing just felt heavily influenced by them...

Overall, it was ok. I kind of liked it, it just didn't entirely work for me. Obviously, from others reviews it's a me issue so do look up other reviews too.

Wow. What a twisted creepy story! Really good tho!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love it when authors step out of their traditional storytelling themes and dive into something completely different from what they normally write.
In this story Proby tells a story about witches and hauntings that is a perfect read for the fall season.
This spooky paranormal romance contains many elements of a creepy, twisted story that will stick with you and make you wonder why you’re reading it at night.
The characters she creates are so complex, completely believable, and leave the door open for a series of books based on the trio of sisters and their unique abilities.
She not only gives us a little touch of the paranormal, but she also involves mystery and suspense. The romance is a fabulous connection and I love that it was just an assumed relationship and leaves out the angst that sometimes goes with two people trying to enjoy each other.
Cash and Brielle are amazing together. He is completely supportive of her throughout the entire book even though believing her had to have been a stretch. Just knowing you were meant to be together is powerful and you totally get that in the story.
Proby definitely has a winner in this fabulous new series kicking off with Shadows. A magically written story full of so many different elements that keeps your interest high and your nerves on alert. Spooky, creepy, sexy, and so dang compelling.
I cannot wait to see what else she brings when the next book comes available!
4.5 chill bump raising stars!
Now I need book 2! How’s it just gonna end like that?! I can’t believe this is Kristen’s first pnr book! Such a gothic, bone chilling, creepy read. I absolutely love the setting of New Orleans for this story. It created the perfect backdrop for ghosts, mystery, suspense and all things paranormal. I absolutely loved the three sisters, and the bond they shared. They each had different “powers”, but worked together in harmony. Loved Cash, and the protectiveness he felt instantly over Brielle. Don’t want to spoil a thing, but I can’t wait to see what awaits us in book 2!!
3.5 ⭐️
This wasn't as scary as I thought it was going to be. There were a few things I didn't entirely buy into and I felt like the story had a few unresolved issues. So, although I enjoyed it, I have a few nitpicks. Here are some thoughts:
- I did like the characters and the relationship between the sisters. The prologue set up their bond and I could feel it. However, after that the characters felt flat. There was no growth. They were the same at the beginning of the story as they were at the end.
- I didn’t really know much about the sisters. Surface stuff about their lives growing up and their paranormal gifts. But beyond that there wasn’t anything deep. It goes to the point above - one dimensional and not fully developed (IMO).
- This guy killed over 100 people in his lifetime and like 10 in just the span of this story. When his character was first introduce I found him really creepy. But once he was killing multiple people a day, every day, it slipped into an over the top bad guy that became unrelatable. Once that happened, the scary factor went away for me. Sometimes, less is more.
- I was intrigued by the overall concept. Paranormal with a bad guy on the lose. However, I felt there was something lacking in the execution. I think it had to do with both factors above - the characters were flat and the serial killer crossed from the realm of scary to kind of ridiculous.
- The H finds out his mom has passed away and immediately starts talking to her “shadow”. No emotion, just stated some facts and it came off as a monotone, emotionless speech. It just felt odd and cold and not the way I would expect someone to act if they just found it their parent died.
- Daphne and Brielle's conflict was not fleshed out well. They don't talk in over a year, meet at a restaurant to talk about these dead people, have a few words, don't resolve anything but they are best friends / sisters in the next instant. It's a 180 turn in their relationship and just some surface discussion mends a year long rift..... Ok. Sure.
- I loved the setting. I could totally buy into the “creepy” factor because New Orleans has such a rich history of unexplainable things that you are better off not asking about.
- insta love. Not my favorite but more believable when it’s a PNR story. However, the suggestion they were “fated” to be together (thus the reason everyone thought their quick relationship made sense) was never delved into. Just mentioned and that was it. In order to get on board with that idea I needed a little more story around the fate thing. The kisses on the forehead made them feel more like friends instead of being passionate about each other. I had some chemistry issues with them in the beginning.
- A few things that didn’t fully resolve that I think will carryover to the next book. Nothing major, but I think this will be one of those series where you will need to read all the sister’s books to get the complete story.
Overall, this didn’t blow my socks off. I thought the characters were a bit flat, the storyline veered too far off into the unbelievable (which caused it to lose the scary factor) and the chemistry was a bit lacking. However, I did enjoy the PNR aspect and am intrigued by the gifts of the sisters so will keep reading the series.
I liked and enjoyed this book. It was interesting and easy to read.
Although overall it was pretty entertaining, there were some key aspects that were laking and prevented me from giving this book a higher rating.
The romance part was very weak. I wound't even categorice this book as a romance or paranormal romance. It is more of a fantasy mystery book to me than anything else. There is no real romantic development, the characters fell in love, yes, but it is more like a background thing that just happens to be there, while the real main topic is the murder mystery. So there is no real emotional investment to be found in their relationship.
Since the romance part for me was out, the plot/mystery/fantasy part had to be very strong for me to really connect, and although as I said, it was entertaining and I was engaged to the story, it wasn't strong enough for me to emotionally connect deeply with it and so to merit a better rating.
The murder mystery was good, however in the end, it was anticlimactic since it was dismissed in favor of the fantasy aspect to take over.
The ghostly aspects had a lot of potential, that is why, all along, I was expecting something big to come out of it, yet the story didn't fully delivered there either, the bigger moment was postpone to the future to come in the next installments.
All that is why I think that overall, and specially the resolution, it was a bit weak. However, I am interesting in the story and so I plan on reading the next installments of the series.
This is brilliant !!
I'm in shock at how much I luvd this book. I was a lil scared when I read the blurb for this book. Normally when it comes to this author I never have to. But when there is PNR mentioned I just don't go near it. It's really not my thing but this book was amazing. It's not really PNR with shifters and vampires it's more witches and powers really. Which I didn't mind at all and it was written so well so that really helped. I just luvd the story and the characters in so glad I have this book a go.
Free Image Hosting at FunkyIMG.com
This book is Brielle's book and she is the older sister out of the 3. All the sisters have different strength and together they are really strong. I luv how close they are and at time it is hard on them but they protect each other the best way they can. Brielle is a great character I really liked her straight away and the connection together her and Cash is strong straight away I really liked there Insta luv. They were so protective of each other from the start. But there was an evil goin around that needed to be stopped. And between them both they were taking it down no matter what they had to do.
Free Image Hosting at FunkyIMG.com
Cash is a profiler for the FBI and has seen some scary stuff but what's happening around the Bayou is crazy. When he finds out that Brielle is getting dragged into he has to protect her. But Brielle is super independent her life has been easy. Her and her sister have been throw so much it's scary to think they had to deal on there own. But these sisters are the strongest women ever and they will fight whatever they have to with Cash right be there side. No one will take this perfect woman away from no matter what.
I luvd this book so so much. Everything about it was really good I couldn't get enough of the story and the characters. I'm really looking forward to more from this series. Like I said I don't do PNR and I wouldn't really call this book PNR to be honest. It's still not made me want to try PNR again it just isn't my thing. But I knew I would enjoy this book from this author. Her writing is brilliant the detail in it from the start to the end was so good. I'm so glad I read this book and didn't leave. I would of kicked myself if I hadn't given it a try. I would highly recommend it.
Still creeptacular! I still love it! Can't wait for Spells
4++ "You're one of the six."; "I see dead people." Stars!
Wow! I really did love this. This type of story appeals to me so much. It very much reminded me of Dark Witch and in my opinion that's a big compliment. The reason this book was not 5 stars for me was simply because everything happen so fast! The romance, the killings, the bad guy reveal. But! I still loved it all.
I fell hard for Cash and Brielle was just fantastic. The killer was 100% psycho! The story was written from three POVs- Brielle, Cash and the killer. Let me tell you, the killer's pov is downright chilling. It made the story.
Clearly there will be at least two more books. One for both the two other sisters. We were left with just a tease for the next book. We have to complete "The Six". I am absolutely in! I think KP is just getting her PNR sea legs. I'm betting the next two books will be even better than this one. All three sister have their own unique and interesting gift. Can't wait to see how this all plays out.
This was a perfect Halloween read! Happy reading!!
I liked this book. It wasn't perfect but I liked it. Believe it or not, I have never read Kristen Proby's work before picking up this book. I love paranormal stories so I thought that this would be a great place to start. So many things worked really well for me with this book and I am glad I made the decision to give it a try.
I loved the premise of this story. There are three sisters that all have extraordinary abilities. The focus is on the oldest sister Brielle in this book but we do get a chance to see the sister's powers in action and learn some of their past. The three sisters all have different abilities. Brielle is able to see ghosts. She lives and works in New Orleans giving ghost tours to tourists and some locals. When she starts seeing recent murder victims, she knows that there is a killer on the loose.
I loved the mystery and paranormal aspects of the story. I have to admit that there were parts of this book that were a lot more graphic than I had expected...and I couldn't have been happier about it because I love a good twisted story. The things that were happening to the women he was taking was almost hard to even think about. The bad guy in this one is a pretty sick case. I was so eager to find out who was responsible and what his motivations were. I thought that the way that Brielle was able to use her gift to help the women was rather imaginative.
Unfortunately, I did have some issues with the story. The romance is this story completely depends on insta-love. Cash see Brielle and decides he is for her. I can sometimes deal with insta-love if the couple has a lot of chemistry but I wasn't feeling that here. Don't get me wrong, I liked both Brielle and Cash quite a bit but they way they jumped into a relationship so quickly without even sharing a kiss just felt off. I decided to just go with it and enjoy the story but the romance always felt like the weakest part of the book.
I would recommend this book to readers who don't mind insta-love romances. Ultimately, I enjoyed the mystery and paranormal elements in the book so much that I wasn't too bothered by the issues I had with the romance. I do want to read the rest of the series to see what will happen to the other two sisters!
I received a digital review copy from the publicist and have voluntarily left this review.
Initial Thoughts
I liked it but the insta-love felt off. I liked the essential mystery and ghost story. These sisters were awesome and I loved their abilities. I didn't feel as much chemistry between Brielle and Cash as I would have liked to see.
DNF REVIEW
This pains me very much, but this synopsis and all the teasers leading up to the release of Shadows read like a thriller. It read like it was going to grip me and have me seeking comfort with my sheets pulled up to my nose (you're welcome for the visual) while I shook next to my husband. Uh....nope. Unfortunately, this one was most definitely a miss for me.
I like true crime novels. Have an entire shelf dedicated to them. I love the mystery that surrounds them and the depravity that is found in the human mind. That always makes me want to see things deeper, heavier, understand more of the 'why' aspect of said depravity. So when this one came out and the foreword told me to make sure the lights were on - I was seriously giddy for a very welcome thriller-type read from Kristen Proby. But, again - nope.
Some inconsistencies. Some eyebrow raising moments of huh were in there. Like, how can you not believe in past lives? YOU see ghosts/apparitions, your sister is psychic and a witch, while your other sister is psychometric. Uh, do you hear yourself?? I don't understand it. That seriously made NO sense to me. Not one lick of it.
This was not scary. This wasn't even creepy. It honestly felt like a mixture of children's stories like Goosebumps and Sweet Valley High girls. All sweet and somber, but oooh - some paranormal activity *giggle*. That's what I felt and I wanted so much more. Something grittier, heavier, or even scarier. Gory? Just something that made this worth the mystery that's been surrounding it since I heard about it.
Instead, I got a fluffy insta-love that didn't have any depth within the actual story - all surface story without background, no build-up to the feelings that the characters were feeling (we found out later why Cash and Brielle felt as strongly as they did), and lackluster craziness from "HIM" that did nothing more than add a cringe-worthy side to a madman.
Kristen's writing started out fun in this one, I won't lie - but I just don't think it was the style that worked for this genre. For me. She's a light read in general, but I was hoping for more grit and depth with this trope/genre. I'm still a wet-behind-the-ears PNR reader, so it was a somewhat new experience for me and so the excitement for the possibility of goosebumps had me rushing toward this one. This just wasn't my cup of tea. While it started out great, it just didn't keep up for me and as much as I wanted to love it, I just couldn't. I'm so sad this didn't work because the idea of it was full of promise for me.
I think I'm going to save myself some eye rolls and stop now.
Interesting backstory with New Orleans, and a protagonist who can see ghosts -with equally magical sisters-and it was looking like there was a possible murder mystery going on.
But I had to nope out when the h is throwing herself into the arms of this practical stranger she's met like 3 times for a total of maybe a few hours, telling him her life story, and acting like he's the love of her life. Or that this stranger she barely knows is her new protector and they are soOoO meant to be.
“You didn’t say anything,” Millie says.
“To either of us,” Cash adds, his hands balling into fists at his sides.
“Well, to be fair, this is our first date,” I remind him, but he doesn’t laugh.
He just narrows his eyes at me.
Say what? Pump your breaks dude. Is this guy really getting mad that she didn't tell him all of the minute details of her life since they met like two days ago?? Yes he did? Oh....
Okay I'm out. Not a fan of weird insta-love stories.
Let me start off by saying "I DON'T READ PARANORMAL"; however, when I read the blurb about Shadows I was so intrigued that I HAD to read, plus......HELLO.....it's Kristen Proby. Wow... this book was suspenseful, eerie, spellbinding, I consumed page after page of this story not wanting to STOP! The twists and turns that unfold were heart-stopping, mind-blowing and jaw-dropping; needless to say this book NEEDS to be read! I can't wait for the next book because that ending had me swiping for more pages that just weren't there and I was yelling.......WTF..... NOOOOOO!!!!
This was amazing! I loved it so much, everything about it. From the creepy gothic feel, the witches, spells, covens, the suspense mystery. Romance, old and new loves, character development and an amazing plot. I was hooked from the beginning and I can not wait for more.
4.5 Stars!
Wow! What a left turn for this author! Great way to jump into not only PNR but suspense as well. And I mean scare the bejeezus out of you suspense!!! The setting deep in the bayou adds to that creep factor. But Holy Cow! I did not see that unfolding the way it did.
Not many spoilers here since you just need to read for the journey. What I can say is that Brielle and her sisters have some other worldly skills. They attribute it to witch blood but for paranormal readers, you may suspect there is more to the story. Cash happens to take Brielle's ghost tour and gets completely sucked into her world. It's kind of insta love for those two. But, again, for the paranormal fans, it doens't seem out of the realm of possible.
What Proby layers over all the heeby jeeby stuff, is her wonderful style of friendship and banter. There are some laugh out loud moments, some great innuendo, and when Cash and Brielle get together---lots of steamy moments with these two.
I'm preparing already for book 2. I'll have to rest up in case I loose sleep. Brielle's sisters are awesome and I hope they get a great HEA as well.
5 ‘Soul Recognition’ Stars
Ohhhh, myyyy, gooooddddd!!! Kristen Proby has the most exciting and goosebump inspiring of reads within SHADOWS! KP’s very first full on PNR – though one of my fav of hers, Easy Magic, already had plenty of supernatural going on – is a mind gripping, heart palpitating paranormal masterpiece!
This is the first of a brand new series focused on three witch sisters and this Practical Magic hardcore fan is hooked! The chill inducing take on the serial killer thriller, the suspense, the sisterhood, and the ROMANCE… We have it ALL!!!
Shadows, as the name itself suggests is very focused on the paranormal, mainly in this case, on the dead’s shadows that Brielle alone can see, her gift. Not only was the book fantastic and intricately crafted in this ‘witchy’ universe, but also the interconnection with the serial killer – specially his POV – which was so beautifully executed that more than once gave me literally the CHILLS. That’s is proof on how masterfully it’s written!
“Sometimes, monsters walk among us, and there’s just nothing we can do about that.”
The love story, oh my, talk about catnip! There are very little things I adore more in my romance than a fated mated /soulmate type of love story, and Cash and Brielle’s meeting and insta feel of connection fit that to a T. Not only that, but thanks to Ms. Proby ‘s usual and fantastic craft, even with this insta parameter, it was just so relatable and believable! I not only read, but FELT their soul deep connection, and it’s blossoming into love.
I can’t explain it. I barely know her, but I crave her company.
It was as if I recognized her the second I saw her.
“I’m drawn to you in ways I can’t explain. Like I said before, it’s a…recognition. Like, I was looking for you and didn’t even know it.”
The suspense, the intrigue, the fear and the pain were so perfectly blended with Kristen Proby’s brand of humor, partnership, love and sexiness that we just dive in into this world, and we never want to emerge back. The mystery and the occult were a joy to unveil, the sister’s relationship and hints of the future couple, enticing to say the least, but the love story… WOW… Never once did I forget I was reading a romance, when Cash and Brielle were on page, their chemistry was palpable, and their love and devotion #RelationshipGoals! Awwww, and insanely did I mention that?!
“Once I start kissing you, I won’t want to stop there. You’re a game-changer, Brielle, and we’re a little busy right now.
This man doesn’t merely kiss and call it a day.
No, he kisses like it’s his damn job. Like kissing me is the only thing in the world he can think about.
As if he’s wanted to kiss me for decades.
Saying I devoured this book is an understatement, because I not only greedily consumed every word, I savored them, and absorbed them into my heart. Shadows was all I hoped for and so much, MUCH more! I was already deeply hooked to Ms. Proby’s masterful contemporary romance, but adding to that my love for PNR, it’s a no brainer that Shadows is now one of my all time fav PNR, and I’m already counting down the days until we get the other two witch sisters, Millie and Daphne, specially after that teasing ending and this book is proof that. Need them stat!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
“Witches aren’t always scary,” Millie says with a wink. “And they look after their own.”
Shadows book one in the Bayou Magic trilogy by Kristen Proby was her first paranormal romance and let me just say bravo babe, bravo. I've been reading PNR books for years and isn't often you find a first-time author to the genre who executes the story this well while also keeping you 100% drawn into the story.
Brielle is the oldest of three sisters, all of which have the gift of magic. Brielle can see the dead but after years of practice she has been able to live with them where they are not a constant bother. Until one night on her graveyard tour she sees a new "shadow" one that she isn't used to. This new shadow not only follows her, which is unusual, but it also has face, the face of someone she knows. She knows that this spirit is seeking her help but how can she help when they cannot talk to her?
FBI profiler Cash is visiting New Orleans on a forced vacation after a tough case. Cash is happy to have some time to spend with his brother Andy and sister in law but what he doesn't expect is to have an instant attraction to his ghost tour guide. After a few brief encounters Cash asks out Brielle but what he ends up with is a bucket load of crazy, or so he thinks. Cash believes that Brielle believes in the things that she sees, but does he? When a serial killer starts targeting Brielle and he starts to see some of the things for himself he can't help but help out this beautiful woman that he feels a connection to after such a brief time.
This story was INSANE!! I knew it would be a bit eerie or creepy, but this book was downright sinister!! Not only is this book told in Cash and Brielle's point of view, but it is also told in the killers and his inner monologue is seriously disturbing. I am good with spooky and chilling but at times this book seriously gave me the willies.
Loved the romance between Cash and Brielle and while it was not heavy or even too in depth it was perfect, it felt real. “I’m drawn to you in ways I can’t explain.”
“This man doesn’t merely kiss and call it a day. No, he kisses like it’s his damn job. Like kissing me is the only thing in the world he can think about. As if he’s wanted to kiss me for decades.”
Shadows is a haunting and intriguing paranormal romance that will have leave you on the edge of your seat right until the very end…
Shadows is unlike anything I’ve read from author Kristen Proby before. From the moment I dove into Cash & Brielle’s story, I was hooked. I loved the New Orleans setting and all of the creepy elements the city alone adds to the story. Not only do you have the perfect setting, but when you add 3 unique sisters to the plot line, you are destined for a treat.
Now, I’m not going to go into a ton of details, because I want you to be just as surprised as I was. Shadows is a thrilling and creepy paranormal romance. You may think you know what you’re getting into when you pick this book up, but I promise you Kristen Proby has a lot surprises in store for you. The characters are complex, yet so easy to connect with. The paranormal story-line was intriguing and captivating. It was fresh and unique and kept me glued to the pages. The romance and chemistry between Brielle and Cash was intense and off the charts. Cash was the ultimate book boyfriend. He was supportive, protective and oh, so swoon worthy.
I loved everything about Shadows from beginning to end. This book is the perfect Halloween treat. It’s well written and consuming. It’s sexy and thrilling. It’s filled with mystery and suspense and things that go bump in the night. It will keep you on your toes and it will keep you guessing right until the very end.
Shadows is the first book in the Bayou Magic Series and I can not wait to see where this series is going to go next!!
This was Proby’s first paranormal/thriller book and I’m having a hard time believing that. The way she wrote this didn’t come off as her first time writing in this genre. I’m thinking she’s been holding back on us!
First things first, I loved the atmosphere here. Having it set in New Orleans was amazing and gave it that gothic feel. Some of the scenes here gave me chills and has me thinking twice about heading back to New Orleans. Please be aware of the trigger warnings I put at the end of my review. Most things don’t bother me, but there were some scenes that made me take pause and come back.
Character-wise I liked everyone that we met. Especially Brielle and her sisters! I loved the idea of three sisters all have different gifts living in New Orleans. The bond between them and reading about them in their different elements was really interesting. I could be biased since witches in threes are my favorite. i.e. (Charmed, the Sanderson sisters, etc)
We did have a romance here between Brielle and Cash. They met and felt like they knew each other before. Maybe in a past life? I need more information on that. Anyway, while I did like them together, I can say that I wish we got a little bit more actual romance scenes between them. There are a lot of moments of finding a killer but not so much between them actually getting to be on their own.
I’m glad this is a series because there are things that I need more information on. Character’s backgrounds and more information about the prophecy of things. From the way this book ended, I’m left wanting more and can’t wait to be in Millie’s POV in the next book.
If you are in the mood for a gothic and gory type story, then I would give this a try!
Shadows is Kristen Proby's first attempt at paranormal romance/suspense and I am quite surprised. This definitely reads completely different than any of Kristen contemporary romance books and I think that was the biggest surprise. I applaud Kristen for stepping outside of her normal genre but I have to praise her for truly outdoing herself.
Kristen does a superb job of the world building in this mystical city with all the musings of witches, warlocks and the like. The descriptions and creepy vibes that pull from these pages really sets the tone for this series. Kristen brings us characters that you can easily understand and feel their emotions. I love how she tactfully handles the inst-love aspect and intertwines that into the sisters' world - nicely done.
Shadows is book one in the Bayou Magic series and you can easily see that the story of these three sisters is going to be a dark, twisted and complex one but extremely intriguing. The story flows a great pace - fast enough to keep things moving, but slow enough to understand how things come together - it's a great blend.
Kristen blew me away with this book. This nothing like her other books and I love that. Kristen does bring her romance musings to this book but it's the world building and paranormal aspect that truly take the forefront of this book and I couldn't be happier.
Bravo for Kristen for surpassing my expectations and writing a PNR book that will have PNR fans begging for the next book!
3 stars
I always liked this author's novels, and I really liked the book that had her paranormal touch, so when I saw this new series I knew I was going to read this book. And after finishing his reading I have to say that it is difficult to review him because I liked some things, not others.
What I liked: The paranormal plot was well written and developed and I was intrigued by the story. I also enjoyed see again Mallory, Sophia. I liked the relationship between the three sisters and their dynamics in the story.What I didn't like: For those who have always been a fan of the Kristen Proby novel, I think it was precisely this element that didn't captivate me. I found the relationship superficial and racing, thrown loose in the book. I couldn't connect with the romance between the characters, so I think that was missing here.
I will read the next book? Of course, after all the dynamics between the sisters and the paranormal pilot were good and made me want to read the next books.
Creepy and dark. The killer murders and tortured women that look like the heroine.
I got to handed to the author, she did ok with this book.
I got to warn though, there’s a cliffhanger.
I liked the sisters. This book kinda reminded me of the show charmed. The 3 sisters had a dead grandmother that wrote them a grimoire book , for a second it sounded like the book of shadows on the show Charmed. You know how the dead grandmother left Pru, Piper and phoebe a book with spells? Oi, of course i remember, I liked this show when I was younger. 😂
Anyway the 3 sisters are part of the 6, that’s including their significant others.
I don’t want to give too much away.
Safety: heroine has had only two boyfriends. And there’s no info on hero’s side. Like nothing.
There’s insta-love. After a week of meeting each other hero had already fallen in love. No OW/OM drama
There’s one thing I didn’t like how hero didn’t seem to care that his mother passed away while he was away. I don’t know he seemed cold and didn’t even cried.
Shadows
By: Kristen Proby
REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Paranormal romance and Kristen Proby pair nicely together, and that is a delightful surprise. Shadows is my favorite type of paranormal story with a haunted city and all that. In this case, the place is New Orleans. This story absolutely captures the eerie tableaux of creeping paranoia and doom that make the atmospheric presence seem like a living thing.
Three sisters with gifts, not normal gifts fyi, means three books, right? Shadows is told in three points of view, one of these being the psycho killer, and this perspective really topped off the story as awesome. It is chilling and crazy and works well for this story. There is a love interest for the two main characters, but it's not a romance story. I'm glad that paranormal is truly the focus here. Shadows is a different vibe for Kristen Proby, but she executes this story perfectly. I can't wait to read Spells!
Brielle sees dead people. Yes, just like in that movie. But it's real. To her the dead are "shadows" without distinct features, (usually), and they don't bother her or even interact with her. Until just now when one of them tried to actually communicate with her. That was when she knew something very wrong was happening in New Orleans, in her community. She's got her two sisters, Millie and Daphne, for support, though, and a new guy in her life, Cash, who happens to be an FBI profiler. With their support, she'll get through this and figure what's wrong, who's doing it, and how to fix it. Except perhaps not. Perhaps the person behind it all is far too evil and too gifted in the same sorts of paranormal things that she and her sisters are, for them to stop him. Brielle, Millie, Daphne, and Cash will have to rely on some heavy duty guides if they want to get through this alive.
Wow, I LOVE Shadows!! I don't do a lot of paranormal reading anymore, but I am really glad I read Shadows. It's spooky and creepy and truly cringe-worthy. The villain was definitely one of the biggest whack jobs to come down the turnpike in a long time, and I love how Brielle figured out who he was, and who he was to her and her sisters. There's more than a touch of paranormal here, but it's not overdone or over the top, and Brielle, her sisters, and Cash and his brother are all fabulous characters. I love the spooky world Kristen has created in the Bayou Magic series, and can't wait to delve more into it. I am so looking forward to Spells, Millie and Lucien's story, now!
